Snow Emergency Declared on Jan. 18

 

The City of Madison has declared a snow emergency on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020. This means alternate side parking restrictions will be in effect this evening from 1:00 a.m. to 7 a.m. for the Snow Emergency Zone as well as the rest of the City of Madison. For more information, where to park, other winter information, and how to sign up for text alerts about snow emergencies visit this site.

Note that you should rely on the City's websites and text alerts, or local media, to get information about Snow Emergencies. I do not always have the ability to post or email this information in a timely manner.

Updated Radium Testing Results for Well 19 Near Picnic Point

Radium levels have once again dropped below 5 picocuries per liter (pCi/L). Duplicate samples collected on 11/20 had results of 4.1 & 4.5 pCi/L for combined radium. The running average of quarterly samples is currently 4.8 pCi/L compared to the Federal Maximum Contaminant Level of 5 pCi/L. Samples for radium testing will be collected again in February.

These results indicate that Well 19 is below the federal standards for radium. Note that Well 19 is the site of the Water Utilities next planned water quality project – a $7.6 million facility that will reduce iron, manganese and radium.

No Refuse, Recycling, or Drop-off Services on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

 

There will be no refuse or recycling collection on Monday, Jan. 20, 2020 in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. The drop-off sites will also be closed. Madison residents who normally have their refuse and recycling collected on Mondays should instead place their carts to the curb for collection by 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21. 

Refuse and recycling for residents that have a Tuesday collection day will also be collected on Jan. 21. More information here.

 

Final Chance for Christmas Tree Collection Begins Jan. 21

 

The Streets Division will begin the final round of Christmas tree collection on Jan. 21, 2020.  

Residents who wish to have their trees collected at the curb should have them out and ready for pickup by 7:00am on Jan. 21.  Trees that have been set out at this time and in accordance to the below rules will likely be collected sometime between Jan. 21 and Feb. 7, depending on workload, weather conditions, and crew availability. Read more.

Co-op Conversion Proposed for N. Franklin Street Home

Madison Community Cooperative has submitted a Conditional Use application to the city for the conversation of a 3-flat house at 19 N. Hancock Street into a housing cooperative. A Conditional Use Permit is required partially because they plan to increase the number of bedrooms from the current 9 to 11. They also propose building renovations, including a ramp in the front for accessibility purposes, 2 small dormers added to the side roofs, 2 parking stalls in the rear, and bike parking.

Property owners and residents living within 200' of the site will receive postcard notification of the public hearing that is scheduled to occur at the Jan. 27 Plan Commission meeting when the Conditional Use Application will be considered. Meeting details will be listed in my alder updates prior to that week, but if you have input on the proposed conversion, feel free to contact me and/or provide public or written testimony at the Plan Commission meeting.

Jan. 30 Neighborhood Meeting on Redevelopment Proposed for 400 Block E. Washington

LZ Ventures is proposing to demolish the Klinke Cleaners building, a house, an apartment building, and two single-story commercial buildings, all between 402 and 414 E. Washington, as well as three houses at 9 N. Hancock, 8 N. Franklin, and 12 Franklin. The developer proposes a 10-story market rate apartment building on E. Washington dropping to 8 stories in the rear with several levels of parking underneath. A commercial space is planned on E. Washington on the first floor.

 

District 6 Alder Marsha Rummel and I are hosting a Jan. 30 neighborhood meeting to discuss the proposal. Please email me if you have input and/or are willing to join a neighborhood steering committee that will form after the neighborhood meeting.

Big Snow Forecast, Crews Ready for Bike Path Snow Removal

 

City Engineering operations crews are ready to clear bike paths in the City of snow this weekend. Clearing bike paths is necessary for use and safety.

As a whole, each snow storm requires coordination between City agencies to remove snow. City agencies, such as the Engineering, Streets and Parks divisions, work together to clear streets, parking lots, bus stops and bike paths. Engineering works in coordination with the Parks Division to maintain bike paths in the City.  

As of Jan. 1, 2020, additional funding went into effect to support snow removal on bike paths on weekends and holidays in addition to its regular schedule. More info here.

2020 "Battle of the Badges" Charity Hockey Game: Madison Firefighters Hockey Club vs Mad City Police Hockey Team

This event will take place Saturday Jan. 25 at Hartmeyer Ice Arena located at 1834 Commercial Ave on Madison's north side. Doors open at 3:45pm with a family skate starting at 4:00pm. Puck drop is at 6:00pm. All tickets are $5 with children 3 and under FREE. This is truly a family friendly event with 100% of all proceeds going to "Safe Communities Madison-Dane County" Opiate Abuse Intervention Services. To date this event has raised over $54,000 with a goal to surpass $75,000 this year. We hope you will join us for an evening of fun that benefits a great cause. The Facebook event page is here.
