From the Police and Fire Commission: Process for Evaluating Finalists for the New Police Chief

 

The next regular meeting of the PFC is scheduled for Dec. 14, 2020, at 5:30 P.M., and will include a public comment period. If there is insufficient time available on Dec. 14 to hear oral comments from those members of the public who have registered, the PFC will likely set aside additional time after Dec. 14, so that any member of the public who wishes to offer public comment regarding this process can do so. Members of the public who wish to offer comment during the public comment period must register in advance using the City of Madison's Registration Statement Form available on the PFC's webpage: www.cityofmadison.com/PFC. Once completed, the Form must be submitted to the following e-mail address: policechiefsearch@cityofmadison.com. The order of speakers will be based on the order of submission of the completed Registration Form. Based on the PFC's standard practice, each speaker will be limited to a maximum of three (3) minutes. The PFC is also receiving written feedback at policechiefsearch@cityofmadison.com.

Where to Get Info on Winter Streets, Parking, Plowing, and Snow

When should sidewalks be cleared? Are snowplows out? Is there a Declared Snow Emergency? Where can I park during a Snow Emergency? The City of Madison winter website has a plethora of useful winter information on these subjects and more. You can learn the locations of where to get free sand for your sidewalks and driveways. You can learn about winter recreation opportunities like ice skating and snowshoeing. And you can learn about the proper way to spread salt to help minimize the effect it has on our environment and drinking water. The City's winter website is www.cityofmadison.com/winter.

Recording Available of Neighborhood Meeting on First St. Men's Shelter

 

At a Dec. 9 neighborhood meeting, hosted by Alder Abbas, Alder Rummel and I, attendees heard from City Community Development Division staff and from Porchlight as they presented the plan for temporarily locating the overnight shelter for men who are experiencing homelessness at the Fleet Services Building, also the future home of the Public Market. The shelter could open as soon as this coming week, which is fortunate given that winter weather is upon us. Transportation will be provided for guests to/from the Beacon since the shelter will be open only from 5pm to 8am each day. A recording of the meeting can be watched here. The meeting included Q&A, COVID protocols, services, how to help, and how to contact the shelter.

 

2020 Property Tax Bills In the Mail

It is that time of year again to expect your City of Madison property tax bill and the City Treasury Office is now accepting 2020 property tax payments. 2020 property tax bills have been mailed and are now available online here.

Payment options are detailed on that website, including various electronic payment methods and payment by phone. Residents are still able to submit their payments by mail to the City Treasury Office. All mailing information is included in the tax bill. You may also use the drop box in front of the City-County Building. Due to the pandemic, in-person payments at the City Treasury Office are not available this year.

All tax payments postmarked on or before December 31, 2020 will be processed as having been paid in 2020.

Update: TLNA Steering Committee for N. Few Proposal

 

The Tenney-Lapham Neighborhood Association steering committee for the proposed redevelopment at 12 N. Few St., met this past week. SEA Design proposes retention of the bulk of the Scooter Therapy building; demolition of a smaller and shorter section, and the construction a new building addition in the current parking lot area. Eight one-bedroom apartments would fill the second floor and with 8 garage spaces underneath that would be designed to promote live-work arrangements or be leased to a small business separately.

 

If you'd like to keep up with the steering committee's activities and/or participate contact TLNA Development Chair Meghan Conlin (mjconlin@gmail.com) or Andrew Horn (andrewh989@gmail.com). The proposal has not yet been formally submitted to the city, so it is anticipated that some aspects could change as the developer moves closer to submittal. As currently proposed, it would be considered by the Urban Design Commission with a demolition permit being considered by Plan Commission. A possible zoning text amendment could be considered by UDC, Plan Commission and Common Council if the footprint of the proposed building extends into the required setbacks from the sidewalk on Curtis Court.

Note: A neighborhood meeting was hosted by the applicant this week. Neighbors have been supportive of the new business with some questions about the proposed hours of operation, 5am until 4am, although alcohol could only be served until bar time. TLNA Council has voted to send a letter of support to ALRC with a condition that alcohol be served only until midnight. I tend to agree with this recommendation as the new business establishes itself as restaurant and meets the requirement that at least 50% of sales must come from food. If this condition is approved by ALRC, the applicant can return to ALRC in the future if he so desires to ask for extended hours.
