District 2 Updates:

AFS-USA, Intercultural Programs

AFS is a non-profit organization that has been in the greater Madison area for over 50 years.  AFS is the oldest and largest exchange organization in the world, hosting over 50 students from six different continents.  AFS prides itself on having a strong volunteer support network for all host families, students studying, abroad, and students studying here in their USA high schools. Madison Mini Marathon

The 15th Annual Madison Mini Marathon is taking place on August 12, 2023. Changes in bus routes and detours may occur, more information may be found here. More information about race time, race course map, and how to sign up to race or volunteer can be found here

Public Information Meeting: Hawthorne Court Reconstruction - July 18th, 2023 at 6:30 PM via Zoom

The City of Madison is planning a 2026 reconstruction project on Hawthorne Court. The presentation will include information about the proposed design, street layout, construction timeline, and how the project will impact nearby residents. Following the presentation, there will be an opportunity to discuss the project and ask questions. REGISTRATION PRIOR IS REQUIRED, which may be done here.

Agenda Item 2

Authorizing the City of Madison to accept an FY22 Economic Development Initiative - Community Project Funding (EDI-CPF) grant of $2 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to support the development of purpose-built Permanent Men's Shelter; and authorizing the Mayor and City Clerk to sign any requisite agreements or other documents in order to formally accept these grant funds from HUD. (District 12).

Agenda Item 13

Authorizing the City Clerk's Office to apply for and accept a 2023 Accessible Voting Equipment subgrant and a 2023 Absentee Ballot Envelope subgrant from the Wisconsin Elections Commission, and amending the 2023 Adopted Operating Budget to increase the City Clerk's Office election supplies budget by $750 and to increase the City Clerk's Office printing budget by $29,373.88.

Parks Alive | Elver Park, Monday, July 17, 2023: Parks Alive builds stronger neighborhoods and connects neighbors to their parks through fun, family-friendly activities, music and free food. Events are held in parks across the city and throughout the summer. Connect with your neighbors and engage with your community at a Parks Alive event near you! Elver Park: July 17, July 31, and August 14. 

Wild Rumpus: An Anji Play Experience, Monday, July 17, 2023: Enjoy child-led play at A Wild Rumpus based on the educational approach of AnjiPlay. The library will provide special play equipment to spark your children's imagination at two parks this summer. Messy clothes and a water bottle are encouraged. Bring your own picnic dinner and make an evening of it! All ages and abilities are welcome. No registration needed. 

NewBridge Summer Concert Series, Monday, July 17, 2023: Concert series sponsored by NewBridge Madison, at Warner Park. Carts in Parks event! Enjoy some treats from local food vendors: Cool Sweet Treats,  KC Taste Asian Cuisine, Taquitos Marimar

Lakeside Kids: Fun With Weather, Tuesday, July 18, 2023: Learn about how the National Weather Service monitors and forecasts the weather! There’ll be a lightning safety quiz and we’ll simulate a thunderstorm by snapping and jumping around. We’ll have our teaching tornado along with some tornado tubes for the kids to play with at the end. Bring your weather questions to try and stump the meteorologist!

East Side Farmers' Market, Tuesday, July 18, 2023: The Eastside Farmers' Market is Madison Wisconsin’s finest weekday farmers' market. Our goal is to bring the freshest Wisconsin grown food direct to the heart of the East side. Our vendor members are agricultural producers and food artisans who make value added products from Wisconsin's agricultural bounty.

Movin' Out Financial Literacy Series (#3 - Savings), Tuesday, July 18, 2023: The City of Madison, in partnership with Movin’ Out, invite South Madison residents to participate in Movin’ Out’s financial wellness series! This six-session financial literacy program covers a range of topics to provide a solid understanding of the fundamentals of personal finance. In between sessions, interested participants can work with Movin’ Out’s Counseling staff on their own financial goals toward homeownership. 

Dane County Farmers' Market - Wednesday Market, Wednesday, July 19, 2023: The Wednesday Dane County Farmers’ Market is located on the 200 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, in between the Madison Municipal Building and the City County Building. While more intimate than the Saturday Market, you will still find many of your favorite Dane County Farmers’ Market members, as well as a full array of fruits and vegetables, eggs, cheeses, honey, maple syrup, bakery items, cut flowers, plants, and many specialty items. 

Free Hands-Only CPR & AED Class, Wednesday, July 19, 2023: Learn life-saving skills with Madison Fire Department EMTs and Paramedics! This class will teach you hands-only CPR, how to use an AED, and help you know what to do if you see someone collapse from sudden cardiac arrest. Registration is free and required. 

The Capitol View Farmers’ Market, Wednesday, July 19, 2023: The Capitol View Farmers Market is returning to the North Star Neighborhood! Join us each Wednesday (May 31-October 11, 2023) from 3:00-7:00pm to support local farmers and vendors, enjoy live music and food carts, and make the most of summer in Madison! 

Parks Alive | Hammersley Park, Wednesday, July 19, 2023: Parks Alive builds stronger neighborhoods and connects neighbors to their parks through fun, family-friendly activities, music and free food. Events are held in parks across the city and throughout the summer. Connect with your neighbors and engage with your community at a Parks Alive event near you! Hammersley Park: July 5, July 19, August 2, and August 16.  

Concerts on the Square, Wednesday, July 19, 2023: The Capitol Square comes alive for six consecutive Wednesdays during the summer months with music from the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra. FREE and open to the public, grab a blanket, a picnic basket, and your family and friends for this Madison tradition! 

Sheboygan-Segoe Redesign, Wednesday, July 19, 2023: The overall project includes pavement reconstruction, spot replacements of curb and gutter, sidewalk, and driveway aprons. The project also includes improved pedestrian crossings, bike lanes, storm sewer replacement, new storm sewer, replacement of sanitary sewer and laterals, water main and services, new street lighting, new pavement markings, and new signs. Segoe Road will be reconfigured from 2 lanes in each direction to 1 lane in each direction with two layout options (See Exhibits B and C below). To give feedback on these options, please fill out the Segoe Resurfacing Survey.  

Barre3 at The Glen, Wednesday, July 19, 2023: Join Madison's barre3 and Madison Parks Foundation on fairway #1 at The Glen Golf Park for a heart-pumping, joy-filled workout. To help raise money for the Madison Parks Foundation, donations are suggested but not required to attend.

Concerts on the Rooftop: Madison County, Thursday, July 20, 2023: Country show band Madison County knows how to rock the Monona Terrace rooftop to capacity! They’ve been voted Country Artist of the Year at the Madison Area Music Association Awards Show, Wisconsin Area Music Industry People’s Choice for multiple years, Isthmus readers’ favorite local country band, and Madison Magazine’s best local band and country band six years running.

Summer Nights at Segoe, Friday, July 21, 2023:  Carts in Parks: The City of Madison Carts in Parks program continues in 2022 and will be regularly featured at parks around Madison! Food carts are scheduled at a variety of parks and community events through the summer. Many of the food carts accept credit for payment, but not all. Please plan accordingly. The exact food cart(s) and the schedule are subject to change. Weather may impact or cancel vending activities. 

Volunteer Day at The Glen, Saturday, July 22, 2023: The Glen Golf Park is establishing an ongoing volunteer program that helps volunteers learn, grow personally and gain professional experience.  

Urban Triage 3rd Annual Summer Kick Back, Saturday, July 22, 2023: The theme for this year's Kickback is Field Day! Celebrate the skin you're in, our community, and the breaking of generational curses by joining us on July 22nd! 

Opera in the Park, Saturday, July 22, 2023: Opera in the Park, Madison Opera's gift to the community, is a night like no other. In beautiful Garner Park, the stars come out in the sky, the light sticks glow in the audience, and world-renowned singers share their favorite opera and musical songs with the Madison Opera Chorus and Madison Symphony Orchestra.

Tenant Resource Center – Resources for Tenants Know your rights! The Tenant Resource Center maintains information on community resources that may be available to provide eviction prevention funds, security deposit funds, and other emergency financial assistance.

Dane County Food Pantry Network – Community Action Coalition (CAC)Are you facing housing or food insecurity? The CAC can connect you to food security services and housing resources in the Madison area, as well as other social services. 

COVID-19 Vaccination – Public Health of Madison & Dane County Learn more about the COVID-19 vaccination, where to receive the vaccine, and book an appointment at one of the city’s pop-up clinics.
