Holiday Recycling Tips: Recycling Old Electronics

We are in the season of giving, which also means figuring out what to do with all the old stuff the gifts have replaced.

Over the past several days, we shared some recycling tips on how you should handle the excess of things that accumulate during the holidays.

Recycle Other Electronics
Recycling electronics is not limited to televisions and household batteries.

A number of electronics are banned from the landfill, like computers and cell phones, and they must be recycled. A partial list of electronics that must be recycled is listed below. A complete list of electronics that must be recycled can be found on the Wisconsin DNR E-Cycle website.

Even if the electronics item isn't banned from the landfill, they can be recycled. Video game systems, Christmas tree lights, extension cords, vacuum cleaners, and many other things can be recycled. Be sure to check the Recyclopedia prior to placing items powered by a cord or batteries into the trash because many of these items can be recycled. If you are still not sure how to handle the electronics item you have, email or call the Streets Division about what you have and we will help.

Electronics can be recycled at the Streets Division drop-off sites. They should not be placed into the collection carts at the curb, or set out as a large item. The drop-off sites are located at 1501 W. Badger Rd and 4602 Sycamore Ave. The sites are presently open 7:30am to 3:00pm. These hours will remain in effect until March 30, 2019.

Computers and monitors require a $10 recycling fee. Recycling fee stickers can be obtained at the Streets Division offices, Madison public libraries, the City's Treasurer's office, or online at www.madisonpay.com. Please note that stickers purchased online will need to be mailed after a successful transaction.

Microwaves are considered an appliance, and they must also be recycled like other appliances, including ovens or washing machines. Do not place microwaves into the recycling or refuse carts. Microwaves require a $15 recycling sticker and can be collected as a large item at the curb or recycled at the drop-off site alongside other appliances.

Local private companies also offer electronics recycling services. To find other registered electronics recycling options near you, go to the Wisconsin DNR E-Cycle website.

Computers (desktops, laptops, net books, tablets, etc)
Computer accessories (keyboards, computer monitors, mice, scanners, modems, routers, web cameras, flash drives, external hard drives, etc.)
Digital video players/recorders
E-readers (Kindles, etc.)
Fax machines
Printers (desktop printers, fax/scan/copy printers, 3-D printers)
Televisions
VCRs
