You're Invited: Bus with your Eastside Alders to the Dane County Farmer's Market

Saturday, September 23rd

Meet up with Eastside Alders at 10am at the corner of MLK Jr Blvd and East Main

Have you checked out the routes/schedules serving your neighborhood since the new Metro Transit network began on June 11th? From several outlying neighborhoods like those in District 3, service to downtown is much more direct. The City is making major investments in the Metro Transit network and infrastructure with local funds and significant federal infrastructure money. The Transit network will play an important role in supporting Madison's growth and offering residents an alternative to relying on cars, which have gotten much more expensive compared to other goods over the last few years are unlikely to become more affordable in the foreseeable future. It's going to be increasingly difficult for working and middle class families and fixed-income folks to afford to buy and maintain the number of individual vehicles they may be used to having in the past. Plus, for busy events like the Dane County Farmer's Market (or other big downtown events), driving through isthmus traffic and hunting for a parking spot can be a pain - and taking the bus avoids both of those hassles.

For those interested in trying out their local Metro Transit route, I would like to invite you to join us on the morning of Saturday the 23rd. This post includes information that will help District 3 neighborhood residents figure out how to bus to the Farmer's Market on the square that morning - but I would still love to see you at the meet-up point at 10am regardless of how you get down there. Hope to see you there!

District 3 bus route map, includes D1, C1, G, A lines

Directions from District 3 Neighborhoods

From the Hiestand neighborhood or the northern half of the Rolling Meadows, Heritage Heights, or Grandview Commons neighborhoods, you can catch the D1 bus inbound along Milwaukee Street. To give yourself time at the market before the 10am meet-up, for example, you can catch the D1 bus at Milwaukee Street and North Star Drive at 8:57am or Milwaukee Street and Swanton Road at 9am

From the southern half of the Rolling Meadows, Heritage Heights, or Grandview Commons neighborhoods, you can catch the C1 bus inbound along Cottage Grove Road. To give yourself time at the market before the 10am meet-up, for example, you can catch the C1 bus at Cottage Grove Road and North Star Drive at 9:23am or Cottage Grove Road and Acewood Blvd at 9:25am.

From the Burke Heights neighborhood you have two options: you can take the G at Pulley Dr and Commercial Ave at 9:18am north to the A along East Wash, and then you can take the A inbound toward downtown; you could also take the G at Pulley Dr and Commercial Ave at 9:23am south to the C1 and then take the C1 inbound toward downtown.

From the Mayfair Park neighborhood you can catch the A line along East Washington Avenue. You can board the A bus at the stop at the northwest corner of the intersection of East Wash and Mendota Street at 9:38am inbound toward downtown.

I used Google Maps to check out each of the routes linked above. Metro recommends arriving at your stop five minutes before the scheduled departure time in case your bus arrives early. For your return trip you can take each of these lines in reverse. You can pay the $2 bus fare with cash (exact change) upon boarding the bus, OR you can purchase a pass at an area retailer and swipe the pass to board.

Bus to the Farmer's Market with Eastside Alders on Sept 23rd, meet up in front of BMO Harris on MLK Blvd at 10am
