2024 property assessments, public information meetings on BRT and other items, announcements and events

In case you missed it, the 2024 property assessments have been released. Locally assessed real estate increased 9.3% in Madison for 2024. Commercial assessments increased 10.5% ($15,584 to $17,223 million), and residential assessments increased 8.5% ($25,826 to $28,021 million). Steady growth and continued development contributed to the increase.

The important thing for you to know is that you will receive your assessment via mail, and you have the opportunity to correct issues surrounding your assessment (for example, number of bedrooms or bathrooms is incorrect) through the “open book” process. Notably, the window for the open book period is very short – it ends on April 26. If your property details are correct, but you disagree with the assessed value of your property, you will need to file an objection with the Board of Assessors by 4:30pm on May 3. Boards, Commissions, and Committee Meetings

  • Transportation Commission: The Transportation Commission meeting will take place on Wednesday, April 24, in virtual format at 5:00 p.m. Agenda items include approving certain August Metro Transit bus stop changes, responding to WisDOT’s I-39/90/94 Project Concurrence Point 2, and providing review and feedback on the Bartillon Path project.
  • Housing Strategy Committee: The Housing Strategy Committee meeting will take place on Thursday, April 25, in virtual format at 5:00 p.m. Agenda items include a presentation on displacement data, a review of a report comparing the approval process durations in the greater-Madison area, and a staff report.

Public Information Meetings

  • Public Meeting - North-South BRT, Monday, April 22: Planning Continues for North/South BRT. At the next round of meetings, the public can provide feedback and see changes that have been made based on input we received, including updated station locations and routing.
  • Transportation Options with Metro, Tuesday, April 23Metro employees will talk about different options for getting around the city, including buses, RoundTrip, BCycle, bikes, and more. They will spend time talking about paratransit, a shared ride service for that uses a variety of companies and vehicles to respond to individual ride requests. Paratransit is an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) service for individuals with disabilities who cannot use Metro’s accessible fixed-route bus service.
  • Public Meeting - North-South BRT, Tuesday, April 23, 2024: Planning Continues for North/South BRT. At the next round of meetings, the public can provide feedback and see changes that have been made based on input we received, including updated station locations and routing.
  • John Nolen Drive Watershed Study, Wednesday, April 24: The City of Madison is completing a watershed study in the John Nolen Drive watershed (as shown below). The City of Madison contracted with an engineering consulting firm to complete this study. The watershed study will identify causes of existing flooding and then look at potential solutions to try to reduce flooding. The study will use computer models to assist with the evaluations. Please note, this project is separate from the John Nolen Drive Reconstruction Project. A public information meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., April 24, 2024, via Zoom. Registration prior is required.
  • Public Meeting - North-South BRT, Thursday, April 25: Planning Continues for North/South BRT. At the next round of meetings, the public can provide feedback and see changes that have been made based on input we received, including updated station locations and routing.
  • Public Input Meeting - Kestrel Park, Thursday, April 25Madison Parks created a Park Development Plan for Kestrel Park that was approved by the Board of Park Commissioners on June 14, 2023.The community and park neighbors are invited to attend a second public input meeting and provide feedback on Thursday, April 25 at 6:00pm via Zoom, as staff present the revised plans. Please REGISTER IN ADVANCE if you wish to attend.
  • Prairie Hills Detention Ponds, Thursday, April 25: This project will include removing existing sediment, deepening the pond with forebays that can be accessed by staff and isolate sediment deposition to pipe outfalls and installing screen structures upstream to collect sediment prior to entering the wet retention pond. A public information meeting has been scheduled for 6 p.m., April 25, 2024, via Zoom. Registration is required prior.

  • Learn to Play Soccer with Forward Madison FC, Tuesday, April 23: Madison Parks and Forward Madison Football Club are partnering to bring you Learn to Play Soccer! This free event is perfect for kids ages 10-12 years old, who will learn basic soccer skills and work through multiple skill stations. Advanced registration is required and may be done online or by calling (608)266-4711.
  • Financial Wellness Workshop #1 (Movin' Out), Tuesday, April 23: Having financial goals is important. In this session, we will cover your “WHY” for changing your current financial state. We will discuss your goals and your relationship with money and how to shift from a scarcity mindset to a money mindset.
  • Yoga Core, Tuesday, April 23, 2024: Yoga Core is a great class to help build strength and body awareness. This class incorporates a wide variety of seated, standing, balancing, and mat-based yoga poses focusing on strength, stability, and mobility. Core-based practices can help enhance balance and stability and prevent falls and injuries as we age. All levels are welcome. Participants will need to be able to get up and down off the floor. Chairs or walls may be used for balance assistance.
  • Learn to Fall Safely, Wednesday, April 24, 2024: SAFELY Learn to fall and to get back up without injury. Falls are a leading cause of death for older adults in Wisconsin. We will use thick “crash mats” for practicing. Classes are progressive. Attending all 4 classes recommended. Scholarships available.
  • Free! - Hands Only CPR, AED and First Aid class! Wednesday, April 24 at 8:30 am or 10:45am.This class will teach you hands-only CPR, which focuses on the key element of chest compressions (location, rate, depth & recoil). The class will also cover the placement and operation of the Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and basic First Aid. This class is a non-certification course and was created for the lay person in the community to learn the basics of CPR and First Aid. With this goal in mind, you can be a vital link in the chain of survival until further medical help arrives.
  • Meditation At Monona Terrace, Thursday, April 25 (This event occurs on multiple dates): Mindfulness Meditation will be led by Sarah Moore M.D., a mind-body practitioner, therapist, and physician. Sarah has been practicing meditation for more than 20+ years and teaching meditation to groups and individuals for the past 15 years. Her personal practice has brought her much peace, joy and stability, and she is excited to share her knowledge and enthusiasm with others.
  • Open House: Park & Open Space Plan, Thursday, April 25The City of Madison Parks Division is updating its Park and Open Space Plan (POSP) and is seeking input from area residents on the plan! The purpose of the POSP is to guide and inform public parks policy and park facility decisions in the City of Madison.
  • Wright Design Series: Wisconsin Women in Real Estate Development, Thursday, April 25: Gain insight into current opportunities and challenges of real estate development from three women developing real estate in Wisconsin.  Each will talk about their community-based approach, how they select projects, and highlight recently completed work.

  • Bird & Nature Adventures | Edna Taylor, Saturday, April 27: Join a naturalist for an easy family-friendly walk from Aldo Leopold Nature Center into beautiful Edna Taylor Conservation Park and enjoy a bit of nature education along the way. Walk will begin at the Aldo Leopold Nature Center, 330 Femrite Drive. Meet outside at the Children's Shack. Co-sponsored by Madison Parks, Badgerland Bird Alliance, and Aldo Leopold Nature Center . No registration is required. No pets are allowed.
  • Bird & Nature Festival 2024, Sunday, April 28: The 2024 Bird & Nature Festival is a free, family-friendly event celebrating Madison Bird City, Arbor Day and Earth Day.  See live birds by Open Door Bird Sanctuary and visit nature displays throughout the day.  Plan 30-45 minutes for your visit anytime between 12 and 4 pm, during this ongoing event.
