Building Inspection Fees
Plan Review Fees
In addition to the Plan Review Fees listed in the chart below, the Building Inspection Division of the Department of Planning and Community and Economic Development will also collect both of the following:
- State Seal fee as charged by Department of Safety and Special Services (DSPS)
- Plan review fees as prescribed by SPS 3031(1)(g) in Table 3031-3

Plumbing Plan Review Fees
Examination Fees. The plan examination fee shall be determined using the fee schedule found in SPS 302.64, Table 302.64-1
Inspection Fees New Buildings & Additions
The fees in the table below are based on the total square footage of the building including all floor levels, attached garages, porches, balconies and decks.
- Group 1: All single or two family residential buildings and to all commercial building space classified as R-2, R-3, or R4.
- Group 2: New construction and any additions to all commercial building space classified as A-1, A-2, A-3, A-4, A-5, B, E, H-1, H-2, H-3, H-4, H-5, I-1, I-2, I-3, I-4, M, or R-1. Examples of building in this group include arenas, assembly halls, banks, barber shops, churches, clinics, educational institutions, gyms, hospitals, hotels, libraries, motels, nursing homes, offices, restaurants, retail, taverns, or theaters
- Group 3: New construction and any additions to all commercial building space classified as F1, F2, S-1, S-2, or U and other buildings not classified in Groups I, II and IV. Examples of building in this group include factories, freight terminals, machine shops, storage buildings, storage garages, or warehouses.

When an application is submitted for a property when only the shell of the building is to be completed, the fee will be calculated at 50% of the total fee for that particular fee group. When an application is submitted for construction of the interior of a building where the shell of the building has been previously granted a permit, the fees shall be based on the square footage of that space and the fee shall be calculated at 50% of the total fee for that particular fee group.
Zoning Review Fee
Madison General Ordinance 28.206 requires a review fee of $0.03 /sq. ft. be collected at the time the building permit is issued. Minimum fee of $25.00.
