Project Background

Reservoir 20 is a 4.2-million-gallon standpipe, constructed in 1973. The reservoir was last painted in 2000. 

Reservoir 20 is nearing the maintenance cycle of every 25-30 years to maintain structural integrity and prevent future degradation. It needs stated upgrades to continue supplying water to the area as reliably as possible. 

Reservoir Project Overview

Reservoir 20 will be taken out of service to keep up with standards. This includes draining, completing the required improvements from the DNR, disinfection, and putting the reservoir back into service.

Updates to Reservoir 20 include installation of a failsafe vent, new fall protection equipment, new handrailing system on tank roof. Other work includes cleaning of sediment, miscellaneous repairs, surface preparation, containment shrouding, and application of paints and coatings.

Will I still have water service during the project?

Yes. Madison Water Utility has a strong and reliable system. During construction, water will come from other wells and pump stations. You should not notice any change in your water service.

How does new paint help the water reservoir?

New paint protects the tank from weather and damage. Over time, old paint can chip or fade and stop working well. This can lead to problems like bacteria growth if too much sunlight gets inside. Painting the inside and outside helps prevent rust, slows wear and tear, and reduces future repair costs.

When will construction take place?

Construction will start in May 2026 and is expected to finish in August. Work hours will be:

  • Monday–Saturday: 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM
  • Sunday: 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM

What should I expect during construction?

Crews will sandblast the outside of the reservoir to remove old paint. This will be loud at times. Workers will try to reduce noise as much as possible.

Will traffic be affected?

Most work will stay on the reservoir site. However, you may notice more trucks and construction vehicles going in and out of the area.
