Out-of-School Time Data Dashboard

In the Madison area, more than 14,000 kids and their parents relied on Out-of-School Time (OST) organizations to provide nearly 2 million hours of support during the 2024-2025 school year.

When kids have consistent access to quality OST opportunities, both they and our community reap the benefits. OST programs work - they prepare kids with the skills needed to thrive in an uncertain world, boost parents' earning potential, and, for the first time, we are able to analyze OST enrollment and participation alongside MMSD school and social outcomes across grade levels.

The results are compelling:

  • Higher Attendance and Achievement

Afterschool participation is associated with higher school attendance, higher GPAs, and better outcomes. The benefits are powerful even for students who have historically faced opportunity gaps.

  • Gaps in Access

While both the scale of programs and the outcomes are impressive, access to programs remains a problem, particularly for students from low-income households. To see how your neighborhood compares, check out our brand new Elementary Afterschool Dashboard below. For now, this dashboard is just focused on elementary aged students, but we hope to expand to more ages soon.

A few notes about the data:

  • Data Sources

Data comes from programs utilizing the MOST Information System and only includes MMSD students.

  • Data Collection

Data is collected from hundreds of locations. Occasionally, submissions may be delayed; in such cases, prior quarter data will be revised. These updates typically affect only a small number of students.

  • Mapping

City Planning areas do not always align perfectly with student attendance areas.

As you are looking through the data, have questions, ideas, curiosities, ways we could share this data better, please feel free to reach out to Nathan Beck, the Madison Out-of-School Time (MOST) Coordinator for the City of Madison and the Madison Metropolitan School District or fill out our short survey to give us your feedback.
