Man injured during shooting on city's east side

The Madison Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred early Sunday morning on the east side.

Officers were dispatched to an apartment building along the 200 block of Cottage Grove Rd. around 3:40 a.m.

They arrived on scene to find an injured 20-year-old man in the hallway. Officers began caring for his injuries until EMS arrived and transported him to the hospital. He is expected to survive.

The shooter was not there when officers arrived, but later returned to talk to police. At this time, this person was taken into custody on drug charges as detectives investigate the shooting.

A shell casing was recovered at the scene and an unoccupied neighboring apartment was damaged.

Detectives with the Violent Crime Unit are leading this ongoing and active investigation.
