Police Shooting of Corey Ruiz

Following the tragic shooting of Corey Ruiz yesterday, there will be a vigil today at Baldwin and Williamson Street at 5 PM today. My heart goes out to Corey's loved ones for his death which should not have happened.

What Happened

As you may have already seen, there are many videos circulating online of the killing. I would caution sensitive individuals against searching them out as the videos are gruesome. MPD has also released a statement on the shooting, but there is a lot of information still missing right now that will come out over the upcoming days and weeks. I'm not going to draw conclusions here, or attempt to defend or vilify anyone. What I am going to say is that this is a tragedy that should not have happened for many reasons, and yet shootings like this keep happening. Clearly, there is something wrong with our system.

What Happens Next

The Wisconsin State Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation will launch an independent investigation. MPD will not be conducting their own investigation, and they will not influence the DCI's investigation.

Additionally, I fully expect the Office of the Independent Monitor to conduct their own independent investigation.

I expect the officer involved to be put on leave. I recognize that there is irony in the officers involved receiving the due process that Corey did not, but ultimately we need legitimate processes in order to bring justice.
