Need to know for today's Common Council Discussion (August 24, 2026, 5pm - 8pm)

Here are a few things to know about today's Common Council Discussion from 5pm to 8pm:

  • The City's approach to recent protests and the subsequent re-opening of Williamson & Baldwin St. (Please note that we will not take up questions related to open investigations, nor budget amendments.)
• How long is the discussion? 
  • The discussion will go from 5pm to 8pm. 
• When is the discussion? 
  • Monday, August 24, 2026
• Will the meeting be recorded? 
  • Yes.  You can find recorded meetings here.  
• Why isn't the discussion being held in the same format as a regular Common Council meeting? 
  • A Common Council discussion is an option that allows Alders to gather information to help us in our capacity as Alders.  One of our most recent discussions was to learn more about the Bartillion Men's Shelter. Summer is also a time where staff and alders may traveling and/or on vacation. A Council discussion doesn't require us to have quorum and allows us to continue a discussion should alders have to leave/join at various points in the discussion. 
• Will there be public comment? 
  • No. However, the general public may send questions/comments to all Alders by sending an email to: allalders@cityofmadison.com . 
• How to watch/listen to today's discussion:

  • Representatives from the following City agencies have been invited to answer questions from Alders: Office of the City Attorney, the Mayor's Office, the Public Works Department, the Community Development Division, the Finance Department, the Madison Police Department, Public Health Madison & Dane County, the Madison Fire Department, and the Office of the Independent Police Monitor.
