Social media post regarding Finance Committee members

Hello, 

I'm aware of a photo circulating which pictures myself and the other Finance Committee members who voted no on an amendment for the Office of the Independent Monitor. 

The photo frames us as being protectors of killer cops.  Since I've gotten questions about the photo and we've all at some point received emails demanding that we arrest police officers, I want to provide some quick info. 

Please note that:

  • WI State statues do not grant the Madison Finance Committee powers to arrest nor charge police officers. 
  • Any budget amendments passing or not passing have any bearing on the arrest of a police officer, nor gives us any power to arrest anyone. 
  • The District Attorney can make charging decisions.  Alders do not have the power to make charging decisions. 
  • The Police & Fire Commission can fire, demote, and discipline police officers. 

There is an overwhelmingly amount of disinformation and misinformation circulating across social media.  Please consider doing a bit of research jumping on and running with any claims.
