I Love Bikes and Especially Bike Infrastructure

Like many Madisonians, I’m an avid cyclist. Over the decades I’ve seen the steady increase in bike paths, lanes, overpasses and other infrastructure that has made biking a reliable transportation and commuting choice for many. I even broke my wrist when I fell off a bike two years ago -- but got right back on as soon as I was cleared by my doctor (this time riding a little more carefully).

Early last week, the management of District 6 bar The Atwood asked me how they could get a couple of bike racks installed in the terrace in front of their establishment. Their patrons often biked but would lock up on the street trees and The Atwood didn’t want to see them damaged.

I reached out to Pedestrian-Bicycle Outreach Specialist Colleen Hayes, who visited the site with Civil Technician Valerie Draves (who works on bike infrastructure and signage) and determined the terrace was an appropriate site. A work order was placed and within less than a week, city workers installed two new post-type bike racks!

Newly-installed racks with a four-bike capacity ... or more if you get creative with a U-lock.

Last week I also took a tour of the nearly-complete Bakers Place apartments at 849 E. Washington Ave. This ten-story structure utilizes engineered wood instead of steel, which is a far more sustainable alternative. The building will also include a couple of large murals – one depicting a pastoral Wisconsin landscape and the other a collection of local “ghost” signs … the type painted on buildings in years past and often outliving the businesses they once advertised. Bakers Place is also seeking approval for a first-floor café.
