postedComplete Green Streets
Thank you for joining the meeting and the discussion for this project. As discussed in the meeting, the City Council and the Transportation Commission adopted the Complete Green Streets policy a few years ago. This guide provides specific criteria for Staff to follow when working on the streets project. The policy is relatively new and attempts to make street projects inclusive of all users.
The policy addresses concerns with accessibility for all ages and all abilities, as well as the protection of trees in the area. The Project Information Meeting (PIM) is not just a checkbox in the process; it is an opportunity for neighbors to learn about the project, understand current policies, and provide feedback. Often, feedback is used to facilitate the completion of design; however, a policy is in place to guide those conversations.
Projects completed before the policy adoption are sometimes less inclusive and car-centric. This policy helps balance the scales and enables us to continue working on making Madison a walkable city. The policy elevates the "Character of the Neighborhood" by deeming the area to be more than just an architectural style, street width, vegetation, and layout; it is also welcoming, equitable, and inclusive.
