Week of December 22, 2025
postedDear Neighbors,
As we head into the holiday week, I want to share a few timely updates for District 7 residents, along with some important reminders related to winter weather and City services. This is a season of reflection, gratitude, and togetherness, and I hope the days ahead bring warmth, joy, and meaningful time with loved ones. I hope everyone is able to enjoy time with family and friends and stay safe during the busy travel days ahead.
Holiday Trash & Recycling Collection Schedule 🎄
With Christmas Eve and Christmas Day coming up, there will be changes to trash and recycling collection schedules:
- Christmas Eve (Wednesday, December 24): Collections will occur as scheduled.
- Christmas Day (Thursday, December 25): No collections will take place.
- Thursday routes will be collected on Friday, December 26.
- Friday routes will be collected on Saturday, December 27.
Please remember to set carts out by 6:30 a.m. on your adjusted collection day and remove them from the curb as soon as possible after pickup.
Snow Plowing & Winter Weather Update (December 18)
We are experiencing rapidly changing winter conditions, and I want to share an important update from the Streets Division.
Bottom Line
Plunging temperatures may lead to icy and very slick conditions, especially overnight. Streets Division crews will be out, but everyone traveling tonight and into Friday morning should plan to move slowly and stay alert.
What Streets Division Is Doing
- Main roads:
- Salt routes are being dispatched to major throughfares.
- Crews are salting approximately 800 miles of traffic lanes after today’s rain to help prevent ice formation.
- Operations will continue through the afternoon and evening.
- Residential streets:
- Around midnight, crews will begin sanding hills, curves, and intersections in residential areas.
- Sanding operations will continue through the overnight hours.
Because today’s rain likely washed away any residual salt, applying salt after the rain but before temperatures drop is critical to reducing icy conditions.
Weather Conditions to Watch
- Slight chances of snow combined with high winds.
- Temperatures expected to drop rapidly into the single digits by Friday morning.
- Wet pavement may freeze quickly, creating what meteorologists often call a “flash freeze.”
Traveling Through Madison
No matter how you travel by car, bike, or on foot, conditions may be challenging:
- Expect icy patches, especially where water has pooled or pavement remains damp.
- Travel slowly and cautiously.
- Consider leaving a bit earlier, particularly if you’re traveling on residential streets that may not be fully treated.
Streets Division staff will continue to monitor conditions and adjust operations as needed.
