Teen drivers arrested for crash that killed construction worker

On Wednesday evening, officers arrested the 17-year-old driver of a blue Ford Explorer that struck and killed a construction worker on Pflaum Road last week.

The driver was charged with 2nd-degree reckless homicide and hit-and-run involving death. He is scheduled to have his first court appearance in November. 

The driver was exhibiting driving behaviors consistent with racing, according to witness statements and video. While no official determination of speed has been made at the time of the collision, witnesses estimate speeds to be 50-60 mph. The speed limit in the school zone on Pflaum Road is 25 mph. 

Officers had initially connected with the driver of a tan GMC Yukon the night of the crash. That driver, also a 17-year-old, was issued an order-in on Wednesday for 2nd-degree recklessly endangering safety, which is a felony.

The driver of the tan Yukon was seen driving in the opposing lane of traffic on Pflaum Road at the time the crash occurred. He is also scheduled to appear in court in November. 

During the investigation, it was discovered that the reckless driving was not isolated to where the crash occurred on Pflaum Road, but also was observed on Monona Drive.

Both vehicles can be seen on video traveling at double the speeds of surrounding traffic. The occupants of both vehicles were known to one another.

The drivers of both vehicles involved in this crash on Pflaum Road have come forward and were interviewed by officers. At this time, it appears potential racing behaviors were taking place prior the crash. 

Both drivers are cooperating with the investigation.

Traffic specialists are continuing to work on interviewing the numerous witnesses to this tragic incident and are going through the video that was collected on scene and submitted by citizens. 

The victim was a 65-year-old male working with several others on a section of road near Alder Rd. 

Investigators anticipate releasing additional details next week.
