Badger Rd drop-off site closed permanently
The Streets Division resident services office at 1501 W. Badger Rd remains open to assist residents with their questions about Streets Division services, including large item work orders and fee stickers.
The Badger Road site is permanently closed because a new salt & sand storage facility has been built on this site, and it is too large for a drop-off site to function here.
resource recovery special charge (RRSC)
Starting on December 28, 2023, if you pay the Resource Recovery Special Charge you do not need to pay a recycling fee for certain items before you drop them off at one of the drop-off locations. The fees are also waived for work orders scheduled for curbside pickup, too.
If you do not pay the Resource Recovery Special Charge, then you must pay the recycling fee for these certain items before taking them to the drop-off site. You will also be charged the recycling fee for the item when scheduling curbside collection of these select items.
The list of items that require a recycling fee can be found on the Large Item page.
Who pays the Resource Recovery Special Charge?
If you receive your recycling collection by the City of Madison Streets Division then you pay the Resource Recovery Special Charge on your Municipal Services Bill. The Municipal Services bill is the same one where you are charged for your water usage.
More details about the Resource Recovery Special Charge can be found on our Recycling page.
Paying the Recycling Fee for Drop-off If You Do not Pay the RRSC
- Use the Work Order System
You must buy a fee sticker for these items using the work order system:
We will mail you a recycling fee sticker after you fill out the work order. The item must have the sticker before we can accept it at a drop-off site.
- Contact the Streets Division
You can also buy fee stickers in person at either the Streets East or Streets West offices during office hours. Office hours are different than drop-off site hours.
Stickers are not available to buy from the attendants at the drop-off sites. They are not for sale at Madison Public Libraries.

Residents and property owners can bring the equivalent of one pick-up or small trailer load of material each day (about 5' x 8'). This load limit applies to all material accepted at the drop-off site
Please note that our curbside limit of 4 95-gallon carts or their equivalent per week applies to the drop off sites as well.
Customers with large volumes of material to dispose of may want to consider hauling it to the Dane County Landfill, or spacing out your trips to visit the site on multiple days.
