Safe Streets Madison Public Input Opportunities

A number of projects proposed for improvements as part of the Safe Streets Madison program have opportunities for public involvement. These include opportunities to take surveys, attend public information meetings and provide input to the Transportation Commission. More information on individual projects is below.

Midvale Blvd (University Ave to Mineral Point Rd) Safe Streets Improvements

Midvale Blvd has been identified for consideration of safety and pedestrian/bicycle connectivity improvements. The proposal to add buffered bike lanes on Midvale Blvd includes the removal of parking. A second neighborhood meeting has been scheduled to review this proposal, discuss the impacts, answer questions and hear more from residents. The Transportation Commission will hold a Public Hearing on the parking changes after the 2nd Neighborhood Meeting has been held.

Greenbush Neighborhood Safe Streets Improvements

Streets in the Greenbush Neighborhood have been identified for consideration of safety improvements and improving connections for walking and biking. Streets identified include Drake St and Mills St. This meeting will also be an opportunity to discuss changes on Randall Ave to support the new Metro Transit Route including changes to the traffic calming circle at Vilas Ave and parking changes near the circle. To gather more information and discuss potential improvements, Traffic Engineering held a virtual meeting via Zoom on Wednesday, May 31 at 6 PM.

Baldwin St (N & S) Safe Streets Improvements

Baldwin Street has been identified for consideration of safety and pedestrian/bicycle connectivity improvements. A neighborhood meeting was held on March 13, 2023, to discuss potential improvements and hear more about traffic safety and connectivity concerns. The proposed improvements in the documents below will go to the Transportation Commission on September 13 for review and potential approval for funding..

  • Transportation Commission –Wednesday, September 13 at 5pm
    • Approved the addition of 4-way stop at S Baldwin and E Wilson. Other items referred to future meetings to review other options. Tentative installation Summer 2024
    • Change in RP3 Parking on N Baldwin requires Public Hearing at future Transportation Commission meeting
  • Transportation Commission - Further discussion of N Baldwin and E Mifflin intersection Wednesday, September 27 at 5pm
    • Approved 4-way stop at N Baldwin & E Mifflin
    • Tentative installation Summer 2024
  • Transportation Commission - Public Hearing on parking removal on N Baldwin: Wed, October 11 at 6pm
    • Approved uphill bike lanes on N Baldwin between E Washington & E Johnson

Eastmorland Neighborhood Safe Streets Improvements

Streets in the Eastmorland Neighborhood have been identified for consideration of safety and pedestria/bicycle connectivity improvements. A neighborhood meeting was held on February 15, 2023 to discuss potential changes and hear more about traffic safety concerns. The proposed improvements in the documents below will go to the Transportation Commission on September 13 for review and potential approval for funding.

    • Approved Bike Boulevard Design Plan (except speed humps)
    • Tentative installation Summer 2024

Neighborhood Meeting:


 

Blackhawk at University - Intersection Improvements & Bike Connections

Safety improvements are being considered for the intersection of University Ave at N Blackhawk Ave to eliminate serious/fatal crashes and make it easier for people walking and biking to cross University Ave. Potential changes:

  • Restrict left turns from Blackhawk Ave onto University Ave
    • Left turns from University Ave onto Blackhawk Ave or Joyce Erdman Pl would still be allowed
  • Create a diagonal two-stage crossing with a rapid flashing beacon crossing light for pedestrians and bikes
    • The current crosswalk would be removed
