Monroe Street Festival, Madison Good Neighbor Gathering, and more

posted

Hi Everyone,
I hope you all had a Happy Labor Day. Labor Day, the unofficial end of summer and the beginning of a new school year. And the time we honor workers and the efforts of unions to protect workers’ rights.
Tragically, this weekend also saw the apparently random assault of a UW student late at night in the downtown area. As no one has been arrested for this horrific crime, I encourage you to be cautious when going out at night. Don’t walk alone. Be aware of your surroundings. Carry a light and perhaps a whistle. These incidents are rare in our city, but when they happen, it’s a serious reminder to be careful, to be smart.

Before we get to this week’s updates, here are two fun events going on this weekend:

Monroe Street Festival

Saturday, September 9, 9:30 am – 5 pm.

The Monroe Street Festival returns for its 45th year on Saturday, September 9th from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm. This beloved event celebrates locally owned businesses and brings the community together for a day of entertainment, food, shopping, and children’s activities.

The festival will take place in the 1600 to 2700 blocks of Monroe Street on Madison’s near west side. Visitors can look forward to the highly anticipated book sale at the Monroe Street Library, as well as “grab and go” specials offered by the many area restaurants and coffee shops. This year’s festival will also feature a climbing wall, kids games, a corn hole tournament, international dance performances, and live music ranging from Irish reels to funk and R & B. For more information and updates, visit the official website at www.MonroeStreetFestival.com.

Madison Good Neighbor Gathering

This Sunday – Bigger and Better Than Ever!

Mark your calendar for Sunday, September 10th, noon to 5pm for the “kiddapolooza” of area festivals --- The Madison Good Neighbor Gathering (GNG)!

Last year this event was rained out but hopefully the weather gods will be smiling this year as we gather at Brittingham Park for an afternoon of fun, food and friendship.

This year’s event has been coordinated by the Neighborhood House Community Center with participation by seven neighborhood associations (Bay Creek, Bayview, Dudgeon-Monroe, Greenbush, Monona Bay, The Triangle, and Vilas.

This public event is open to all and is particularly kid-friendly, with a dual inflatable slide, dance classes, games, Wild Rumpus circus activities, live music (including local funksters Don’t Mess With Cupid), a bike parade, food carts and much more!

Thanks to the financial support of Dudgeon-Monroe and Vilas Neighborhood Associations, as well as many D13 businesses, this event is free and open to the public The organizers are hoping to keep it free, and if you’d like to help with financial donations and/or volunteering, that would be fantastic.

For more info about how to chip in financially and how to get involved as a volunteer, please click here. (NOTE: Volunteers are still needed, especially with set up and clean up. Please fill out this form if you can help.)

See you at the GNG – and fingers crossed for sunny skies!
