City Meetings
Plan Commission
The Plan Commission meeting will take place on Monday, August 11, at 5:30 p.m. in virtual format. Agenda items include a resolution changing ordinances related to the City’s street tree protection provisions and development-related requests (none in District 3). Here’s more information about the street tree protection changes, which include:
- Increases the protection zone around street trees in construction areas from the current five feet to a wider range based on the diameter of a tree’s trunk (the bigger the tree, the wider the zone)
- Suspends or revokes permits for tree protection violations to ensure compliance
- Establishes a street tree replacement fund, with funds coming from fees paid when the removal of a street tree is proven necessary for a project

Transportation Commission
The Transportation Commission meeting will take place on Wednesday, August 13, at 5:00 p.m. in virtual format. Agenda items include a Traffic Engineering staff presentation about pros/cons of potential safety improvements along Williamson Street where high-speed cars have been known to leave the street and damage buildings/cause injuries, and the Quarterly Traffic Safety Report from Madison Police Department.
Board of Park Commissioners
The Board of Park Commissioners meeting will take place on Wednesday, August 13, at 6:30 p.m. in virtual format. Agenda items include a very interesting presentation about parks planning and development (note the two upcoming District 3 park Development Planning efforts on the roadmap - for Woods Farm and Canter Parks, more details soon), and approving the Madison Parks Division’s 2025-2030 Park & Open Space Plan (read more in this recent blog post I shared on the topic).

Metro Transit Bus Schedule Changes Effective 8/17
Starting Sunday, August 17, Metro will implement a number of route, schedule, and stop adjustments, including providing all-day, every 30 minutes service on the D2 route to Verona, WI.For additional information on the new D2 Route to Verona, visit MyMetroBus.com/Verona.
Route adjustments impacting District 3 riders will include:
- Route C - Minor schedule updates
- Route D - D2 extension to Verona, resulting in D1 stop time adjustments
The D2 and D1 share a general D route between Monroe Street and East Johnson Street. Adjustments to the D2 route mean that the D1 times also need to shift a bit to keep the two roughly 15 minutes apart along that shared stretch.
If you ride the C or D routes, please check out your bus route’s post-August 17th stop times and plan accordingly (use the links above to find the timetables).
Questions can be sent to mymetrobus@cityofmadison.com.
Heads Up: Southeast Area Plan Focus Events 8/19 and 8/26
The public engagement phase of the Southeast Area Plan continues, with staff attending neighborhood events and community groups around the planning area and recording feedback from residents about their neighborhoods and related concerns.
Two upcoming Paint and Pack events at Hiestand Park and Honeysuckle Park will area residents, particularly families, for a back-to-school event with a school supplies giveaway. Kids will be invited to help paint colorful stencil animals on the parks’ basketball courts! Residents who join are encouraged to share their ideas for how to make our community better.
Event logistics:
- Hiestand Park basketball court: Tuesday, August 19th at 5:30pm (rain date: August 20th)
- Honeysuckle Park basketball court: Tuesday, August 26th at 5:30pm (rain date: August 27th)
