Snow emergency through 1/25, volunteer for MMSD, speeder's hotline, new business in the neighborhood, announcements and events

Hello neighbors,

We still have a snow emergency tonight, so please remember to park on the odd side of the street (morning of 1/25). If you park on a street that only has parking on one side, your car can remain there. However, if you have the opportunity to move it, it will really help the snow plow crews.

Volunteer in our local schools

MMSD has issued an all-call to help keep kids in school. They need volunteers to help with classroom, clerical, supervision, custodial and food service support.

Speeders Hotline

We Alders frequently hear from our neighbors about speeding in our district. You can file a traffic complaint directly by using the online reporting system, or by calling the Speeders Hotline: (608) 266-4624.

1619 Project

On Tuesday, January 25, join in community for an evening with Nikole Hannah-Jones, Pulitzer Prize-winning creator of The 1619 Project, staff writer at The New York Times Magazine, and co-founder of the Ida B. Wells Society for Investigative Reporting. Hannah-Jones will reflect on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., through the lens of her award-winning work investigating racial injustice and the consequences of slavery in American history.

We have a new business in our neighborhood at 10 S. Allen Street. Let’s give this woman-owned business a warm welcome! The Progress Center for Black Women is hosting a shopping meet up from 2:30-3:30pm on Saturday, January 29. But you can shop for handmade bath salts, soaps, scrubs, lotions, and lip balms anytime between 12-6 Mon-Fri, and 1:30-6 Sat.

Protect Your Trees from Gypsy Moths

Thanks to an intrepid neighbor who saw the previous announcement about gypsy moth egg masses, the University and City are now aware of a gypsy moth infestation at the Chancellor’s residence. Thanks for looking out for each other!

Announcements

• The Dane County Land and Water Resources Dept. has a limited supply of free native plants available for use in school or community projects within Dane County that benefit water quality and education. Plants will be available for pick up in late summer.
• The City of Madison is seeking to fund proposals in 2022 that support community partners in their work delivering direct assistance to undocumented individuals and families as they cope with the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. Applications are due by 12:00 noon on January 28.
• Remember that the deadline to contact staff for the 2022 Neighborhood Grant Program pre-app meeting has been extended to January 31. Final deadline to apply for a grant is February 7.
• It’s Restaurant Week this week! Meals are available for dine in or take out.
• This year’s Cookie Grab benefits Centro Hispano. Don’t miss this delicious opportunity to sample the fruits of the labor of our amazing local culinary artists, and pair some local beers if you’re so inclined.
• The Madison Food Policy Council, of which I’m a member, has opened the annual Seed Grants competition. Applications to support new and recently emerging projects or programs that support access to healthy food in our community are due by Monday, February 28.
• Applications for the Young Adult Civic Engagement Awards are due March 26. One $500, non-renewable scholarship will be awarded to a young person who demonstrates leadership abilities including initiative, integrity and service to others.
