Rain done, flood risk remains; Reminder about Midvale Blvd survey; Black Restaurant Week, events at The Glen, Dane Dances and more!

posted

Hello neighbors,

As I write this, it looks like the majority of the rain has passed – phew! However, we are still under a flood watch until tomorrow (Monday) morning. In particular, if you are traveling to the isthmus today, be prepared to take alternative routes if there is standing water. Key events like Ride the Drive and the Black Restaurant Week Jamboree at Warner Park have been cancelled for the day.

One of the ways Madison is proactively planning for major weather events like these is through a comprehensive watershed study of our city. Area studies have identified priority projects for improving stormwater movement away from built areas. The projects will take many years to complete. In our neck of the woods, we’ve benefited from the University Avenue reconstruction, which expressly addressed prior flooding events with the addition of a larger storm sewer. The next major reconstruction that will affect our area and improve stormwater management is reconstruction of Regent Street. The City will host a public information meeting at 6:30 p.m., Sept. 15, via Zoom. During the meeting, City staff will discuss the upcoming construction project. Registration prior is required.

Reminder: Traffic Engineering has opened a survey about what residents want to see happen when Midvale Blvd from Mineral Point Rd to University Ave is resurfaced next year. This resurfacing project is part of the normal process of resurfacing our streets as road conditions deteriorate with typical wear and tear. Resurfacing helps to extend the life of our roads between major, more expensive reconstruction projects. Please note we are asking for your address as part of the survey so staff can assess responses based on who lives on the street vs. who uses the street for transportation purposes. The three options are shown on the project page, if you would like to review those before responding to the survey. We highly recommend forwarding the survey to residents who live on Midvale Blvd and nearby streets, and local biking enthusiasts, in the event they are not subscribed to these emails. It’s important to note that no matter what, there will be significant pedestrian improvements crossing Midvale Blvd implemented as part of this project. The survey closes September 2. The project will come before the Transportation Commission on September 10.
