113 Ely Place appeal this Tuesday; Water main flushing this week; Lucia Crest Park trees to be removed; Events & Announcements

Hello neighbors,

The appeal of the decision by the Landmarks Commission to allow a lot division at 113 Ely Place will be heard at the Common Council meeting on Tuesday, September 8. You may register for Public Comment, or send a message to All Alders with your comments on this topic.

Water main flushing will begin Tuesday, September 8 north of Regent Street, west of Breese Terrace.

Three large trees in Lucia Crest Park will be removed in the coming months. They are diseased or dying, and present a potential risk to park users. Please spread the word to your neighbors to expect these trees to be removed! Replacement trees will be planted in the future.

  • Live at the Glen: Tony Castaneda Latin Jazz Band, Friday, September 11: Wisconsin's premier Latin Jazz Band for over 20 years, Tony Castañeda and his band have been honoring and keeping alive the music of what some call the Golden Age of Latin Jazz. Don't miss this great event, from 6-8pm at the Glen!
  • Westmoreland Summer Nights, September 12: Join your neighbors for Dog in Soup (4:30-5:30), Los Chechos (Latin blend – cumbia, ska, reggae) (5:45-6:45pm), Mama Digdown's Brass Band (New Orleans-style second line brass) 7-8:30pm, finishing with a Drone Light Show: 8:30 sharp. Expect a high-energy, end-of-summer night, with food trucks galore, that turns the park into a festival.
  • Hoyt Park Fall Migration Bird Walk, September 13: You must sign up in advance for this bird walk, from 8-10am, as it will be limited to 20 people. As we walk through the park we will make occasional stops to look, listen and learn about the many bird species that take part in the fall migration. Please bring binoculars if you have them. 
  • Madison Good Neighbor Gathering 2026, Sunday, September 13: Come to Brittingham Park from noon-4pm for this family-friendly festival of fun!
  • Friends of Hoyt Park Annual Meeting, September 16: The FoHP annual membership meeting will take place from 6-8:15pm at the Midtown Police station, featuring Badger Talks presenter David Drake of the UW Urban Canid Project. This talk is open to the public and will be followed by the FoHP membership business meeting.
  • Friends of Hoyt Park Third Thursday Walk, September 17: The topic for the September guided evening walk will be fungi. Fall is a great time to view all the interesting fungi in the park and the Madison Mycological Society experts know where to find them!
  • Wag & Walk dog walk will start and end near lot 60 on Saturday, September 19. The event begins at 9:30am, and ends at 1:30pm. If you don't like dogs, you may wish to avoid lakeshore path on this date!
  • The7th Annual Regent Neighborhood Art Walk will be on Saturday, September 26th from 10:00am-4:00pm (rain date is 9/27).
  • Save the date: The Bicycle Film Festival will be at the Barrymore on Thursday, October 1, starting at 6:30pm.
  • Save the date: On Sunday, October 4th, the Ride for Your Life event will honor the life of Sasha Rosen. This bike ride and walk will start at Brittingham Park, and end at the State Capitol, with bikes riding through Madison's neighborhoods.

Boards, Commissions, and Committee Meetings

  • Common Council: The Common Council meeting will take place on Tuesday, September 8, at 6:30 p.m. in hybrid format. Agenda items include appointing Devine Nzegwu as alder for District 1, authorizing the Economic Development Division to administer a Williamson Street Business Stabilization Support Program, and transferring $28,500 from the contingent reserve to the Office of the Independent Monitor.
  • Board of Public Works: The Board of Public Works meeting will take place on Wednesday, September 9, at 4:30 p.m. in virtual format. Agenda items include adopting the City of Madison Pedestrian Plan and adopting the City of Madison Safe Routes to School Strategic Plan.
  • Board of Park Commissioners: The Board of Park Commissioners meeting will take place on Wednesday, September 9, at 6:30 p.m. in virtual format. Agenda items include adopting the Southeast Area Park Development Plans.
