Workshops and Walks
We are looking for south side residents to spend 1-2 hours to meet with city staff to discuss creating art/cultural expression and to discuss how better to bicycle safely around the neighborhood.  RVSP your space below.

Art and Placemaking Walk
Karin Wolf, Madison Arts Coordinator, will explore ideas of how art can inspire to story with meaning. You'll visit three locations and share your ideas. This interactive session on Tuesday, September 24, and a follow-up session on October 22, will lead to a new, resident-inspired artform. Connected with the update to the South Madison Plan, this is a way to express what your neighborhood means to you. Tuesday, Sept 24 and Oct 22, 6:00 – 7:45pm - South Madison Library, 2222 S Park Street

Bike and Talk Action Workshop

We want to make every neighborhood bikable for all ability levels. Renee Callaway, Madison Pedestrian Bicycle Administrator, is ready to bike and talk about how to make it easier, safer, and more fun to get around on the south side. Connected with the update to the South Madison Plan, this is a way to show city staff the best and not so great places to get to on bike. Bring your bike as there will be a group ride to start the day. If you prefer not to bike with the group join the workshop at 2:30pm back at the Goodman South Library.  Inside if weather is uncooperative. Sat, Sept 28, 1 – 3:30pm - South Madison Library, 2222 S Park Street

Project - What is it all about?
In fall 2019, the City of Madison will begin working on an update to a portion of the 2005 South Madison Neighborhood Plan. This is a 10-15 year look into how we shape the future – we'll work on issues that are relevant to the community, determine how best to achieve them, and figure out how to move forward.
What's different from the 2005 South Madison Plan?
This is a big one – the city will be welcoming the Town of Madison into its municipal boundaries on October 31, 2022. That breaks down to 2500 persons and 6000 parcels.  This plan will work with the Town of Madison government and its residents, businesses, and property-owners to plan for its integration into the City.
What else is interesting about this project?
  • An inventory and transition plan for the Town of Madison
  • A market study to help to determine viable businesses
  • A brownfield assessment and grants to clean up sites
  • Concepts for The Village on Park (aka The Villager Mall)
If I get involved, what could happen?
Your involvement will shape what happens in the future. It might take some time to put the pieces together but your investment in the community does matter. Community voices from the last neighborhood plan paved the way for:
  • The acquisition of The Villager Mall and subsequent upgrade to the commercial space and the construction of Access, South Madison Library, and Urban League.
  • Making Lincoln Elementary safer by relocating the bus boarding off of Cypress Way to the parking lot, and installing pedestrian islands and sidewalks on Cypress Way.
  • Installation of the first splash park in Madison that provided easy access to a recreational water activity within a residential, walkable neighborhood.
  • The construction of Burr Oaks Senior Housing provided affordable, close to bus routes, and easy access to shopping and services for low income seniors that resulted from the sale of and financial assistance from the City/CDA.
  • A safer way to move through the south side occurred with new signalized intersections at Buick Street, Hughes Place, and Wingra Drive (at Fish Hatchery), new sidewalks leading to Goodman swimming pool, and a safer pedestrian access under the viaduct near Quann Garden.
  • Stabilizing the single family areas in Bram's Addition, Burr Oaks, and Capital View neighborhoods by coordinating a massive downzoning of residential areas to retain single family use.
