Project Overview

The City of Madison is committed to reducing impaired driving locally. Between January 2023- January 2026 there were 861 total crashes that were flagged for impairment resulting in 18 fatalities and 416 injuries in the City of Madison. Impaired driving results in immediate and long-term social and financial costs to our communities, healthcare systems, law enforcement and other public and private resources. Impaired Driving is preventable and can be reduced using countermeasures, including designated driver programs offered throughout the year and during high-risk holidays, educational campaigns about risks, as well as public safety-designed alcohol retail laws.

Click and Collect Environmental Scan

Public health and safety research identifies policies and practices that prevent and reduce alcohol misuse without inconveniencing moderate adult drinkers (The Medical Collect of Wisconsin's Alcohol Policy Project). Alcohol misuse includes driving impaired. One alcohol retail practice that is vulnerable to impaired driving risks is Click and Collect sales. Click and Collect is a curbside retail offering that allows customers to order online and pick up their alcohol product in a designated parking spot. The City of Madison passed its own Click and Collect law in 2018, and this Vision Zero project is assessing this law to ensure public health and safety provisions are followed.

Project Schedule

  1. Hire a Click and Collect intern Completed

  2. Test out Click and Collect at the businesses that offer it 3 different times Completed

Learn about the Risks of Driving Impaired and Safer Solutions!

Social Media and Blogs

With our partners at Public Health Madison and Dane County, we educate about the risks of driving impaired and safer practices when drinking/using to reduce preventable injuries, illnesses, and death. Check out our Facebook and Instagram to learn more, and share with others what you've learned.

Don't Risk It, Ride Instead

With our partners at Metro, we encourage the public to use the bus to get to and from local bars and taverns. You can find service maps, schedules, and rider tools on our website, and, if you're a local business, we encourage you to print and display our Get Around Safely flyers at your establishments. All of this can be found on Metro Transit's Get-Around webpage.
