Storage Tank Closure Permit
You need approval to close any tank system. This includes:
- Above ground storage tanks of 60 to 5,000 gallons.
- System components including (but not limited to) piping, vents, leak detection, cathodic protection, and spill/overfill protection systems.
You need approval for the plan at least 15 days before the closure date.
For storage tanks of more than 5,000 gallons and all underground storage tanks, apply through WI DATCP (Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection).
How to Apply
Your application must include:
- Tank closure application
- $250.00 permit fee
- 3 copies of the site plot plan, drawn to scale and showing:
- property lines
- buildings
- tanks
- piping
- streets
- overhead and underground utilities
- limits of the excavation
- temporary location of excavated dirt and backfill

We will return two copies of the plans and a letter of approval or conditional approval after review.
General Requirements
- DATCP-certified tank remover is recommended for tank closure.
- Portable fire extinguishers with a rating of 2A-40B:C must be on-site
- Closure company is required to have a calibrated flammable vapor indicator or equivalent instrumentation to determine the percentage of the lower explosive limit, and/or the percentage of oxygen

- Permit: $250.00
- Re-inspection: $100.00
Fees will double if you do not get proper approval before starting work
