Where to Get COVID-19 Information

I continue to recommend getting information about the COVID-19 pandemic from Public Health Madison & Dane County. Their various social media channels can be found via links on their website. Public Health is an agency of the City of Madison and Dane County. Both are coordinating with Public Health and using their expertise to evaluate the situation and make public announcements.

Eviction Hearings On Hold Through April 17

 

This information is from District 2 County Supervisor Heidi Wegleitner - Dane County Judge Bailey-Rihn has suspended eviction hearings from 3/16 to 4/17. Heidi has also asked Sheriff Mahoney to suspend executing eviction writs, but he reportedly has not committed to that yet. State law prohibits local government from enacting or enforcing a moratorium ordinance for evictions, sadly.  If the suspension is lifted as planned, it will be a very busy May-November for evictions due to the lost income from COVID-19.

 

Please note that landlords can still file eviction cases, try to get tenants to sign bad deals, and evict tenants if they default during the current "moratorium". THERE IS NO GOOD REASON TO SIGN AN EVICTION STIP DURING THIS TIME unless you are sure you can comply and need the case closed/resolved ASAP. You can still get help from the Dane Co Eviction Defense Project for new cases by calling Heidi at 608-620-2002 or emailing hmw@legalaction.org.

Trash & Recycling Collection Services to Begin Earlier Starting March 16

The Streets Division will start refuse and recycling collection services at 6:30am beginning on March 16, 2020. The 6:30am start time is a slight adjustment to the traditional 7:00am start time for these services. This earlier start time will be in place until further notice. More details here.

Request Absentee Ballot or Vote Early for April 7 Election

Early voting locations for the April 7 election are now operating. Visit this site for locations and hours.

Also, please consider requesting an absentee ballot rather than waiting until April 7 to vote. The majority of poll workers are over the age of 60 and some are members of groups susceptible to the coronavirus, so the typical ease of voting on April 7 could be impacted.

Contested races include the Democratic Presidential Primary, the important Wisconsin Supreme Court election,  two Madison Metropolitan School Board seats, and the Dane County Board of Supervisors District 5 seat (District 5 includes areas west of Lakelawn and N. Henry near campus), as well as a Statewide Referendum. Please vote!

Voters may also visit MyVote.wi.gov to check their voter registration, request an absentee ballot, find out what will be on the ballot or find their polling location.

March 26 Steering Committee Meeting for Proposed Redevelopment on 400 Block E. Washington

 

The James Madison Park (JMP) District steering committee that is reviewing the LZ Ventures redevelopment proposal for the north side of 400 block of E. Washington Ave is tentatively scheduled for 6pm, March 26, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 322 E. Washington. If the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the meeting is likely to be postponed. I will publicize any postponements in my updates and the steering committee will also distribute that information via their email list.

Note that the Landmarks Commission is scheduled to consider the proposed demolitions of the current structures on the proposal site at their March 16 meeting (see agenda and discussion below in Meetings of Interest). On March 11, the Urban Design Commission considered a second informational presentation on the proposal. The developers' application and presentation to UDC from Wednesday, March 11, including both a previous and current design, can be found here.

 

City Asks for Public Feedback on New Stormwater Guidelines

Over the past 3 years, Madison and surrounding areas have experienced a large number of extreme storm events. When the stormwater system is overloaded with too much storm or rainwater, either in heavy rainstorms or multiple heavy rainstorms in a short amount of time, flooding happens.

Madison ordinances include requirements for water quality, water quantity and erosion control design standards for anyone who wants to build in the City of Madison. City engineers reviewed the current ordinance and standards. Based on the recent heavier rainfall the area is experiencing, City engineers updated the standards to support expected larger and more intense rain storms.

 

The proposed changes have been posted and are ready for review and feedback. A series of public meetings are scheduled to take feedback on the proposed changes. Meeting details and contact info here. Note that the March 24, 2020 meeting will provide a recap of comments and final proposed ordinance language.

 

Check the meeting's page or City Engineering's Facebook page for any meeting postponement. Postponement or not, consider taking advantage of the ability to email comments; they should be sent to engineer@cityofmadison.com by April 10, 2020.

Mark Your Calendars; Beacon Community Meeting April 29

The Beacon, Madison's homeless day resource center working to provide community solutions to help men, women, and children who are experiencing homelessness, is holding its second community meeting of the year on April 29th from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. The meeting will be held at the Beacon, 615 E Washington Ave (enter at back of building on E. Main St.).

Beacon staff will continue the education piece that they started at the last meeting in regards to how to speak with/approach homeless individuals and role play some scenarios. They will also address any concerns that are brought up. If there are any questions, concerns, or suggestions you may have, please contact Michael Moody at mmoody@ccmadison.org or John Adams at jadams@ccmadison.org, or call either at 608-590-3072.

City Proposes Two Options for an Off-Leash Dog Park 

The City of Madison is seeking public input on the location of a future off-leash dog exercise area on the city's east side. Two potential locations are under consideration, one will be selected:

• Option 1 OB Sherry Park PDF 
• Option 2 Eastmorland Park PDF 

A public meeting was scheduled for Thursday, March 19 when city staff would present the proposed options and seek input, but that meeting has been canceled. If you would like to comment on the proposed options, please contact Mike Sturm at (608) 267-4921 or msturm@cityofmadison.com.
