About Alder Devine O. Nzegwu
I am honored to serve as an alder for District 1 on Madison's west side. I bring a practical, community-centered perspective to the Common Council, grounded in humility, preparation, fiscal responsibility, and a genuine commitment to the residents of District 1.
My priority is to listen, learn, and earn the trust of District 1 residents, neighborhood associations, local businesses, community organizations, and city staff. This engagement will help me understand both the immediate concerns and long-term priorities of our district. I aspire to be known as an alder who is present, diligent, and approachable. My goal is to serve with integrity and contribute to the progress of District 1 and the City of Madison as a whole.
I currently work as a Credit Analyst with John Deere Financial, where I review complex information, assess risk, adhere to policy, and make fair, responsible decisions. This role has sharpened my ability to balance immediate needs with long-term considerations and maintain a level-headed approach when the answers aren't straightforward.
My financial background has taught me to ask careful questions, thoroughly examine available information, and consider how decisions impact both current needs and future stability. I will apply that same discipline to discussions regarding the city budget, development, services, and public resources.
Service has been a significant aspect of my life outside of work as well. I am the President and a founding member of Umu Igbo Unite Wisconsin, a statewide organization dedicated to cultural preservation, community service, leadership development, and civic engagement. Previously, I served as the Treasurer and Community Service Chair for the Urban League of Greater Madison Young Professionals, and I was also a member of the National Advocacy and Action Committee for the National Urban League Young Professionals. Currently, I serve on the City of Madison Parks Facilities, Programs, and Fees Subcommittee. My experience with the Wisconsin Women's Network Policy Institute taught me how policy is created and how community voices play a vital role in shaping it.
