The Safe Streets Madison program works to improve traffic safety and ensure that Madison streets are accessible for everyone. Streets should be safe for people who walk, take transit, bike and drive.

Parisi Construction will begin construction on various Safe Streets Madison projects on Monday, May 19, beginning with the Milwaukee Street & Walbridge Avenue intersection. Below is the full list of projects:
- Milwaukee St at Walbridge Ave—median island and RRFB
- Milwaukee St at Portland Pkwy—path connection and RRFB
- Drake St & Brooks St—intersection bumpouts
- Langdon St at Henry St and at Carroll St—intersection bumpouts
- Odana Rd at Parman Ter—intersection bumpouts, sidewalk, and RRFB
- Segoe Rd at Richland Ln— intersection bumpouts
- Buick St—sidewalk
- Fisher St at Dane St and at Center St—bumpout
- Raymond Rd at Gilbert Rd—bumpouts
- Gammon Rd & Mineral Point Rd—median nose extension
- Badger Rd east of Park St—sidewalk
- Cottage Grove Rd at Acewood Ave—left turn signal and median nose extension
- Blaine Dr & Toban Dr—sidewalk
- University Ave at Blackhawk Ave—median island and RRFB
- Wisconsin Ave at Gorham St and Johnson St—signal improvements and island widening

Program Priorities
- Severity: Data from the High Injury Network (HIN) is used to determine where safety improvements are most needed.
- Impact: How much do we expect the proposed change to improve the issue.
- Equity: Implementing traffic safety measures in a fair and equitable manner to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries on City streets. Prioritizing projects that will affect underserved communities.

Potential Future Projects
Traffic Engineering staff evaluate submitted requests and propose projects to the Transportation Commission. The commission reviews each proposal, makes changes, and approves final projects.

Bicycle lanes especially ones with a buffer provide space between motor vehicles and bicyclists and improve safety.

Public information meetings are held for many projects citywide. Learn more about these meeting's by visiting the Let's Talk Streets webpage.
The Transportation Commission also holds public hearings on Safe Streets projects. The public can comment on projects when they go to the commission.
