The Madison Police Department continues to investigate a fatal crash that left a man dead.

The Dane County Sheriff’s Office had initiated a traffic stop earlier, but the driver did not stop. The deputy did not pursue the vehicle.

The driver continued northbound on S. Stoughton Road. Witnesses reported seeing a vehicle speeding and enter a ditch along the median side of the road. The vehicle exited the ditch, went across all northbound lanes of traffic and then crashed into a tree on the other side of the road.

Officers arrived to find the vehicle on fire. They were trying to put the fire out when firefighters arrived on scene. The driver, a man in his forties, was pulled from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

The Madison Police Department is investigating a fatal crash on the city’s east side.

Officers were dispatched around 11:40 a.m. to the frontage road of southbound Highway 51 at Buckeye Road. The Madison Fire Department also responded.

A vehicle hit a tree and caught on fire. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. 

This remains an ongoing investigation.
