Hello neighbors,

It’s that time of year again where I remind you of the responsibility of all property owners to clear their adjacent sidewalks of snow and ice by noon the day following a storm.

  • All sidewalks need to be cleared by noon Monday December 8.
  • This includes corner curb cuts, which may have snow accumulations from street plows.
  • If you cannot clear your walkway, please reach out to a neighbor for help.
  • If you aren’t on one of the community listserves, there are many young people willing to help shovel for small fees, and neighbors often help out regardless.
  • If you happen to have a snowblower and notice neighbors who haven’t yet cleared snow, maybe you just want to do a good deed and go ahead and take care of their walkway too. Thank you in advance for being a good neighbor!
  • Remember that the report a problem website is available to report properties that have not cleared their walkways by the deadline. Citations will be given if snow or ice covers the walk at the time of inspection – there are no grace periods for this.
  • If you do need more time to shovel due to age or disability, the city can add your address to the snow extension list. The extension gives you an extra 72 hours to clear snow. Homes must be single-family and owner-occupied. To add your home to the list, please call Building Inspection at 608-266-4551 and provide your address.
  • When there is ice that you cannot remove, please use the sand provided by the city in the large green trash cans nearby.
  • If you must use salt, please do so sparingly: salt makes its way into our precious waterways, and we want to avoid that.
  • Please also refrain from using salting agents that have rock salt or magnesium chloride – these are particularly irritating to the paws of our neighborhood pups walking by.
