Recent Gun Violence on Portage Rd. in District 17

Dear Neighbors, 

I am heartbroken by the loss of a young life in the shooting that took place on Portage Road in District 17 late Saturday night. I extend my deepest condolences to the family, loved ones, and everyone grieving this tragic loss. Our community is hurting, and my thoughts are especially with the family as they navigate this unimaginable pain.

I am also holding the young man who remains hospitalized in my thoughts and wishing him a full and speedy recovery.

After learning more about what happened through an update from former State Representative and District 17 Alder Samba Baldeh, I reached out to him to share my condolences and to ask that he extend my condolences to the loved ones impacted by this tragedy. I am grateful to him for sharing my thoughts and contact info with those impacted. 

Gun violence continues to take too many lives and devastate families. I echo former Alder Baldeh's thoughts that our community has to commit to gun violence prevention, accountability, and doing the hard work needed to keep community members and ourselves safe.
