More about us
Pre-Service Academy
Our training team runs a yearly pre-service academy where recruit officers receive over 900 hours of curriculum. Other law enforcement agencies require that when a new recruit is hired that they have already obtained their law enforcement certificate through a college program. We offer a more in-depth training to ensure our officers have all the tools needed to be able to provide the best service to our community. The tone of our academy endeavors to treat all of our recruits as continuing adult learners, topic areas of training to include law, crisis intervention, firearms and use of community resources. Upon completion of the academy, recruits are assigned to a 4-month field training program with an experienced officer, working the 6/3 regular patrol workweek, working various shifts prior to a solo patrol assignment.
Accelerated Academy
In addition to our pre-service academy, we strive to have at least one accelerated academy a year. This offers lateral transfers from other agencies for officers already certified. In order to ensure that these recruits police our community the Madison way, we offer a 3-month academy followed by several weeks of field training before solo patrol.
Professional Development for our Commissioned Personnel
Our team is committed to providing our employees training that develops them as leaders, focusing on best practices in modern policing. Each year, we require commissioned staff to attend at least 24-hours of training provided in house. These professional development courses range from required State testing to officer wellness, de-escalation and scenario based training. With a large auditorium and numerous classroom spaces, we also host outside trainings and invite community partners and outside agencies to attend.
