Required Routine Meter Maintenance 

The Public Service Commission of WI requires that water meters be tested on a regular schedule (WI administrative Code 185.76) to ensure accurate billing on your monthly Municipal Services bill.

What to know:

  • There is no charge for this service.
  • Your water meter is located inside, usually near the shut-off valve in a basement or the lowest level utility closet or mechanical area.
  • We will need to meet an adult, at least 18 years old, to be allowed access inside to the water metering equipment.
  • The appointment will take up to an hour (per meter change).
  • Most residential water meter changes incur an interruption in water service for up to 15 minutes during the appointment.
  • Many larger buildings have a bypass which will allow us to change the water meter with no interruption to water service. If your property does not have a bypass, water will be off during the duration of the appointment and tenants should be notified in advance.

PLEASE NOTE: Madison Water Utility Field Service Representatives are City of Madison employees. They will arrive in a marked vehicle and wear a badge identifying them as a Madison Water Utility employee. 

How to Schedule an Appointment:

  • Call Madison Water Utility meter shop at (608) 266-4765 or email metershop@madisonwater.org to schedule your appointment.
  • All utility personnel will have a Madison Water Utility issued ID and will be driving a Madison Water Utility vehicle.
  • Call our Meter Shop at (608) 266-4765 to schedule the appointment. You may also email metershop@madisonwater.org.

About the Appointment:

  • Scheduled appointment times will be Monday through Friday, between 7:30am – 1:30pm.
  • Most often, residential appointments take up to 60 minutes and water is off at the property for up to 15 minutes during the appointment.
  • A person 18 years of age or older will need to be at the property to allow us access to the water metering equipment inside your home. Water metering equipment is usually located in your basement or a lower level, near a utility/mechanical room or area.
  • There is no charge for this appointment.
