Trickle Down Town

If you have not seen this documentary I please ask you to watch it and share it within your networks.  It is a story of a city that shares the same experiences Madison is facing around the lack of housing affordability and its direct impact on our communities.  It is our story!  The story of the pain and suffering of so many marginalized people.  The story of displacement and the desire of some to push unhoused individuals back into hiding in order to satisfy the "out of sight out of mind" mentality.  

But it is also a story of hope, compassion, dignity and much gratitude.  It is the story of so many community organizers, advocates, volunteers that just like here in Madison, dedicate their time and lives to help our unhoused population.  It is a story that incites self-reflection.  It is an opportunity to examine our own values and the role we each play in this crisis.

I want to say thank YOU, to those organizations who have committed years of service to our neighbors, families and individuals.  And to the city staff who are tirelessly working and collaborating across multiple agencies to find solutions to address safety and processes in a dignifying way.  But to make a real difference it will take all of us!  All hands on deck to address houselessness, the time to act is now.

Join WRTP | BIG STEP and the Building Trades Council of South

During the career fair, high school students will explore a wide range of construction careers in the building trades, such as; bricklayers, carpenters, drywall finishers, electricians, glaziers, ironworkers, laborers, operating engineers, painters, plumbers, roofers, sheet metal workers, steamfitters, tile setters. Each trade will have a different tent/workstation outside. The station will have information about a specific trade and a hands-on activity related to it.

Afterward, students can visit the "employer career fair" on the other side of the lawn, which will have local contractors currently hiring.

Students can sign-up for one of four sessions available: 

Tuesday, July 27: 9 AM - 12 PM

Wednesday, July 28: 9 AM - 12 PM
Wednesday, July 28: 12 PM - 3 PM

Students will receive an event t-shirt and goodie bag at the career fair.

• Madison is working on several projects this year related to how our streets work. These projects will impact the way the City makes decisions about streets in the future: how they are designed, who they serve, how they are used, and how to make them safer. We want these future decisions to be rooted in shared community values.  More information here

City Employee Wage Increase Parity

The Committee on Employee Relations will be discussing a resolution to provide wage increase parity for general municipal employees at its meeting on Wednesday.

• The second event in Madison Public Library's "Live Well@Your Library" in-person wellness series will be a multicultural, multigenerational and multisensory experience outdoors at Meadowood Park (located near Meadowridge Library) on July 25.  Children's activities will also be included so busy parents or caregivers can enjoy the event. • The new Carts in Parks program will support community-based organizations interested in organizing micro-vendor markets throughout the City of Madison in City Parks. Latino Chamber of Commerce (LCC) Plaza Community Markets are designed to create opportunities for underrepresented communities of color. Their first event will be on Sunday, July 25, at Penn Park from 10am – 3pm.
