Week of June 9th

posted

Dear District 16 Neighbors,

I hope that you are enjoying the start of June and the beginning of summer! Our district has so many beautiful parks and outdoor spaces, and I hope that you will take advantage of the incredible programming that is offered throughout Madison for families and kiddos of all ages. This Thursday, June 12th, the Goodman Pool will be opening for the summer!

Wear orange press conference

On a more somber note, June 6th was National Gun Violence Awareness Day. I was proud to join County Executive Melissa Agard, Mayor Satya Rhodes Conway, Interim Chief Patterson, leaders from Moms Demand Action and Public Health Madison & Dane County to discuss the importance of ending the epidemic of gun violence, safe storage of firearms, and how to have these conversations with our youth.

As a reminder, the city will be hosting several budget engagement sessions throughout June. The first one was held this past week, where we heard from public works agencies and city leaders about the 2026 budget. I strongly encourage you to attend one or more of these sessions. They provide a valuable opportunity for education and input on the city’s budgeting process.

As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I hope to see you soon at an event in the community!

MPD Traffic Safety Enforcement:

The Madison Police Department is launching a new data-driven traffic safety plan to help reduce dangerous driving. The proactive safety program runs now through September 1, 2025.

Department leadership will review crash data and pinpoint potentially dangerous intersections and sections of roads throughout the city. These areas will then receive extra patrols and additional enforcement. Problem areas will be identified each week.

“We’ve had an increase in community members reaching out concerned about traffic safety. This program was designed after hearing their concerns,” said Assistant Chief Matt Tye.

Drivers may see more speed enforcement waves as a result of this safety plan. The primary focus of this initiative is the enforcement of hazardous moving violations through the issuance of citations.

“Research consistently shows that citations are more effective than warnings in improving driving behavior. We hope through education and extra enforcement, people will be more mindful of their driving behaviors,” Tye said.

The Department will evaluate the data collected at the end of the summer and determine future plans.

Equal Opportunities Commission:

The City of Madison Equal Opportunities Commission is hosting a new series of public listening sessions to discuss workplace discrimination and empower individuals with the necessary tools to report it.

The first session will be held this Wednesday, June 11, at 6 PM at the Central Library, 201 W. Mifflin Street, Madison, WI. Nearby off-street parking is free after 6 PM. Refreshments will be provided. The sessions are open to the public. All are welcome to attend. Please let us know in advance if you need interpreters for language access.

These listening sessions are part of a broader citywide initiative to engage community members in open dialogue and amplify diverse experiences. The Commission aims to build more equitable and inclusive professional environments across the City of Madison.
