Neighborhood Grants, I-39/90/94 Study, Meeting and Event Highlights for the Week of February 26, 2024

Calling all neighborhood leaders, residents, non-profit groups and others who support community building in neighborhoods: please circulate this list of announcements via email lists, newsletters and other communication methods.

Neighborhood Grant Program Deadline February 26, 2024

Have you and your neighbors been thinking about making community improvements or strengthening your neighborhood group? The Planning Division will once again offer funding through the  Neighborhood Grant Program for Leadership and Capacity Building and Community Enhancement projects. 

Please review the  Grant Program Guidelines and Application. You can also view the  Workshop recording to help you understand criteria and past projects. Please share project applications with your alderperson. The application deadline is February 26, 2024, at 4:30 p.m.

SEED Grants Deadline March 1, 2024

The City of Madison 2024 Budget includes $50,000 in grant funds to be distributed by the Madison Food Policy Council. The Madison Food Policy Council is encouraging community groups to apply for SEED Grants. Any proposal that improves the local food system and makes food more accessible for City of Madison residents will be considered.

RACE Forward Grants Deadline March 29, 2024

Race Forward and Americans for the Arts are seeking proposals from local organizations for funding to participate in the first annual Cultural Week of Action on Race and Democracy (CWA) this September 27 to October 5, 2024. Funding will be for about 12 to 15 sites; participation in the CWA will also be encouraged and open to organizations not requesting funding. This is an opportunity to deepen commitments to racial justice and inclusive democracy through cultural activities. The application deadline is March 29, 2024.

• Finance Committee: The Finance Committee meeting will take place on Monday, February 26, in virtual format at 4:30 p.m. Agenda items include dissolving TID 39 (Stoughton Road), authorizing funds to support rental assistance and support services for residents living at 7933 Tree Lane and 715 Rethke Avenue, and authorizing the execution of an amendment to a Purchase and Sale Agreement that would provide the City with park land in District 17.

• Plan Commission: The Plan Commission meeting will take place on Monday, February 26, in virtual format at 5:30 p.m. Agenda items include amending Madison General Ordinances to clarify various underground and site parking requirements, as well as development-related requests in Districts 4, 16, and 19.

• Transportation Commission: The Transportation Commission meeting will take place on Wednesday, February 28, in virtual format at 5:00 p.m. Agenda items include approving the State / Municipal Agreement for Transportation Alternatives Program Projects for the Capital City Path Extension and the West Towne Path Extension, a discussion of e-bike speed on shared-use paths, and a review of the Transportation Improvement Plan.

• Coffee with a Cop - East District Station, Monday, February 26: Officers serving the east side of Madison are hosting a Coffee with a Cop event on February 26. The goal of the event is to connect community members to the officers patrolling in their neighborhood.
• Learn How to Ride Metro at Meadowridge Library, Tuesday, February 27: Learn how to use Metro Transit’s fixed route city bus service. Topics include using Google Maps, the Transit app, and other digital options; paper schedules and phone service; and discounted fare options. Metro employees will answer your questions about bus travel and provide one-on-one assistance in English and Spanish.
• Yoga Core, Tuesday, February 27: Yoga Core is a great class to help build strength and body awareness. This class incorporates a wide variety of seated, standing, balancing, and mat-based yoga poses focusing on strength, stability, and mobility. Core-based practices can help enhance balance and stability and prevent falls and injuries as we age. All levels are welcome. Participants will need to be able to get up and down off the floor. Chairs or walls may be used for balance assistance.
• Learn to Nordic Walk, Tuesday, February 27: What is Nordic walking? Join us at Elver Park on Tuesday, February 27 and learn what it's all about! We've partnered with Madison Nordic Ski Club (MadNorSki) for this free workshop. Participants of all ages are welcome and will explore Elver Park and learn where to hike and snowshoe in this park.
• Meditation At Monona Terrace, Thursday, February 29: Mindfulness Meditation will be led by Sarah Moore M.D., a mind-body practitioner, therapist, and physician. Sarah has been practicing meditation for more than 20+ years and teaching meditation to groups and individuals for the past 15 years. Her personal practice has brought her much peace, joy and stability, and she is excited to share her knowledge and enthusiasm with others.

• MPD Community Academy, Thursday, February 29: The Madison Police Department is now accepting applications for this year’s Community Academy. The program is designed to give people an understanding of the department’s values, goals and operations. The free academy will run six consecutive Thursdays starting Feb. 29. The evening sessions will start at 6 and end no later than 9.
