Moving Days Logo

Reminder: August Moving Days Continue

The Streets Division continues providing information to those who are moving in the downtown/campus area through next week. You can find information here, but below are some highlights for the coming days:

  • Saturday, August 13: The Streets Division will not have crews collecting from the move out area. All three drop-off sites will be open on Saturday, 9:00am to 4:00pm, which is normal procedures. Residents using the Olin Avenue drop-off site are likely to encounter some large vehicle traffic as crews will be working on hauling trash from our trash transfer building to the landfill on Saturday.

  • Sunday, August 14: Crews will be collecting and starting at 6:00am. The goal is to clear as much as possible in the morning before it starts to get crowded downtown.

  • Monday, August 15: Crews will start at 4:00am on Monday, August 15. Since it is such a very early start, it is possible some residents may be disturbed by the noise of our collection trucks. Crews are starting early to avoid any conflict with all of the moving traffic that will be downtown later in the day.

  • Looking beyond August 15, extra crews will still be working in the move out area and eventually scaling back by Friday, August 19 with a plan to return to regular Streets Division operations on Monday, August 22.

Campus State St Garage Redevelompent

Wednesday, Aug. 24 Neighborhood Meeting for Redevelopment of State St-Campus Parking Garage

On August 24 at 6:30pm, please join Alder Verveer, Alder Bennett, and me for a virtual neighborhood meeting to take a first look at a proposed redevelopment of the State Street-Campus Parking Garage at 415 N. Lake Street. Mortenson Development has been chosen by the City as the developer of the apartments proposed for above a new city-owned parking garage that will include a new intercity bus terminal. The existing parking garage along Lake Street will be demolished and replaced while the garage section to the east of Hawthorne Court will remain. Some mixed-use space is planned for the first floor.

Atop the six above-ground stories of the city's parking garage, Mortenson proposes nine floors of student apartments. They are continuing to negotiate with the city about all aspects of the proposal, including levels of rent affordability for some number of apartments. A below-grade level will provide about 95 parking spaces for the apartments. The developer has not yet filed land use applications, but that is expected later this fall.

Registration for the meeting is required. Click here to register.

Shortly after the August 24 meeting, the Campus Area Neighborhood Association will form a neighborhood steering committee to further evaluate the proposal. All will be welcome to participate in that process.

Meanwhile, on Monday, Aug. 15, the Landmarks Commission will receive an informational presentation about the proposed redevelopment's potential impacts on an adjacent building that is a Designated Local Landmark - Luther Memorial Chapel at 626 University Avenue. This building houses the Church Key Pub and a liquor store. At this point, Landmarks will take no formal action on this item. See "City Meetings of Interest" below for the Landmarks Commission's meeting agenda.

N Butler St Existing

Proposed Demolitions of 117-125 N. Butler St. at Landmarks on Monday

Also before the Landmarks Commission on Monday is the demolition of three multi flats - 117, 123, and 125 N. Butler Street to make way for a proposed redevelopment. The developers, Reese Fisher and Blake Fisher, propose to demolish these three existing apartment houses and combine those lots with another lot that is vacant in order to construct a new four-story building with 32 market rate apartments comprised of studios, 1-bedroom, and 2-bedroom units. A below grade level will provide 24 parking spaces for vehicles, 3 spaces for mopeds, and 35 spaces for bicycles.

City staff's report on the three homes proposed for demolition can be found here. The report includes the following:

117 N Butler: Two-unit residential building constructed in 1894 in the Queen Anne style with no preservation information on file.

123 N Butler: Four-unit residential building constructed in 1937.

The preservation file for this property states it is a Colonial Revival two-story brick veneer building altered by architect Ed Tough in 1937 as a residence for Katherine P. Regan, original date of construction unknown. The file also shows that the Landmarks Commission reviewed this property on the demolition agenda in 2017 and again on June 4, 2018. At that time, by unanimous consent, the Landmarks Commission voted to recommend to the Plan Commission that the building had historic value related to the vernacular context of Madison's built environment, but it was not itself historically, architecturally, or culturally significant.

125 N Butler St: Two-unit residential building constructed in 1874.

There is no preservation file for this property or site file with the Wisconsin Historical Society, but a demolition report shows that the Landmarks Commission reviewed this property on the demolition agenda on June 4, 2018. At that time, by unanimous consent, the Landmarks Commission voted to recommend to the Plan Commission that the building had no known historic value.

The Landmarks Commission is advisory to the Plan Commission for demolition proposals, so Plan Commission will later make the official determination concerning the demolition applications. See "City Meetings of Interest" below for the Landmarks Commission's meeting agenda.
