Hello from your new District 3 Alder!

2023 Property Tax Assessments
The 2023 property assessments are now available on the City website at cityofmadison.com/assessor. Assessment notices were mailed today to all property owners whether or not their assessment has changed from the previous year's value. Property values increased 14.4% overall from the 2022 assessments. Commercial property has increased 16.8% and residential assessments increased 12.9%. Information about the property assessment process in Madison is available in a Madison Assessor’s Office video available here.The open book period will begin Monday, April 24 and close Friday, April 28 at 4:30 p.m. This period of time is an opportunity to discuss property value and provide reason for changing value, if appropriate. Property owners must initiate contact with the appraiser for their property in one of two ways: email: openbook@cityofmadison.com; call: (608) 266-4531.
I-39/90/94 WisDOT Design Alternatives Project
You probably saw former Alder Paulson’s many posts on this topic. To recap, WisDOT project staff are putting together design alternatives for 67 miles of Interstate highway lanes and interchanges, including several along the East Side of Madison. Here’s the project webpage with more information about the project and its phases.
Of note to residents in and near our district is the possible new interchange near what is currently the far eastern end of Milwaukee Street and I-94/WIS 30. I am working with City Transportation staff and other local elected officials to organize a public information meeting on this part of the project during the second half of May. I hope to have time, date, and location details in time to share with you my next weekly blog post! If you can't make it to the meeting, no worries. I will continue to share information with you in these blog posts.
Water Main Flushing
Water Main Flushing plans beginning Monday April 24th (all flushing is daytime unless otherwise noted). Check out Disk Golf
Local disc golf courses (including our very own in Hiestand Park!) reopened this spring and a new opportunity began for locals interested in checking out the sport! Thanks to the coordination of the Madison park rangers, anyone with a valid Madison Public Library card can now check out a disc golf kit, available at all nine branches of the Madison Public Library (MPL) system. Common Council
The Common Council meeting will take place on Tuesday, April 25, 2023 in hybrid format at 6:30 PM. Agenda items include amending the 2023 operating budget and setting the 2023 rates for the sewer utility, stormwater utility and landfill remediation (citywide); amending portions of Section 9.23 of the Madison General Ordinances relating to regulation of mobile home parks; repealing and amending sections of the Madison General Ordinances to remove the penalty of possession of certain weapons; and more.

- Earth Day Events in Madison Parks: This weekend, April 22 and 23 celebrate Earth Day with Madison Parks, the Friends of Urban Nature and volunteers across the city.
- Habitat Homebuyer Program Information Meeting, Tuesday, April 25, 2023: Learn how you could own an affordable home through Habitat of Humanity of Dane County. Information on how to apply, program requirements and where and what we build.
- Financial Literacy Workshop brought to you by the Urban League of Greater Madison in partnership with the City of Madison. The Financial Literacy Workshop will be an interactive event that explores essential financial topics, including saving, budgeting, understanding credit, and building financial goals. The event will take place on Tuesday, May 2nd, from 6 PM – 8 PM at the Urban League (2222 S. Park St).
- HUD-Approved Homebuyer Education Class (2-Part Class)(April 22 and 29): This class is offered virtually and in person as a two part series. If you need help registering email cmonsivais@lacasadeesperanza.org.Your Path to Homeownership is provided by La Casa de Esperanza, a Non-Profit HUD Approved Housing Counseling Agency dedicated to assisting individuals and families to increase income, build savings and gain assets.
- Inspired by Wright: A Hands-on FLW Tour, Saturday, April 29: Join us for this hands-on Frank Lloyd Wright Tour demonstrating how Wright saw geometric shapes as underlying forms of nature and applied them to almost all his work. As you tour the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center, you’ll learn how this unique site influenced Wright’s choice of geometry, which is expressed in nearly every aspect of the building and grounds.
- Madison Public Library Welcomes New Artist-in-Residence at Pinney Library: The Bubbler at Madison Public Library is welcoming a new Artist-in-Residence at Pinney Library. In addition, Madison Public Library Celebrates National Library Week: National Library Week takes place April 23-29, 2023. Madison Public Library will be celebrating in-person in our libraries, as well as online via social media. National Library Week was first celebrated in 1958 by the National Book Committee and has since evolved into an annual celebration highlighting the valuable role libraries, librarians, and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening our communities.
- Madison Metro Providing Free Summer Bus Passes for MMSD Middle and High School Students : For the third year in a row, the City of Madison is giving every Madison Metropolitan School Districts Middle and High School student a free Metro bus pass for the summer.
Streets Division Updates
- Yard waste collection is ongoing! Remember – you only get two pickups chances in the spring. One pickup in April and one in May. Don’t miss the dates when you should set out yard waste. - Brush collection is also going on now. Get the dates when you can set out your brush at www.cityofmadison.com/BrushCollection.
- If you are working on your garden and would like some mulch, don’t forget that the City has mulch available at 121 E. Olin Avenue. Details about the wood mulch can be found at www.cityofmadison.com/Mulch.
