Reiland Grove Subdivision Proposal Going to Plan Commission 6/23

Veridian Homes has a proposal in District 3 that goes to the Plan Commission during Monday’s meeting. The approval for Monday is for a “preliminary plat”, which will still need to be adjusted in various ways and go back to the city for “final plat” approval before they can start construction. Veridian’s proposal is for a new neighborhood subdivision called Reiland Grove, to be located on currently undeveloped property between Reiner Road and Felland Road, north of Commercial Ave/Hwy TT. I first shared information about this in my March 22nd blog post ahead of an April 3rd neighborhood meeting on the proposal. Here’s a recording of that neighborhood meeting with lots of information and some Q&A.

Reiland Grove is proposed to include 264 lots for single-family homes, 224 lots for 112 two-family homes (duplexes), 60 lots for townhouse homes, one lot for a new City park, one lot for a private park, four outlots for stormwater management, and six outlots for future development that will require separate approvals. Here is a link to the detailed plans for the proposed neighborhood. Veridian hopes to begin construction of the first phase of the subdivision in 2026, with the work expected to last over 10-15 years based on market conditions.
Written comments to Plan Commission members can be sent to pccomments@cityofmadison.com. Residents who wish to register a position on the proposal (support/oppose) can do so using the City’s registration system (agenda items 14 and 15) and can either register as non-speaking or register to speak to Plan Commissioners by zoom during the meeting before the vote.
Heat Advisory Issued for Dane County Through Monday Evening
Temperatures are predicted to be dangerously hot with heat indices approaching 103°. The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory from 12:00pm Saturday (June 21) through 7:00pm Monday (June 23).
Extremely high temperatures coupled with high humidity can make you sick and cause heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Over 1,000 deaths from extreme heat events occur each year in the United States. People most at risk from getting sick from the heat are older adults, those who work or exercise outdoors, infants and children, people without housing, and people with a chronic medical condition.
To stay safe during extreme heat, follow these tips:
Stay cool
- Stay in air-conditioned buildings. If you need a cool place to stay, public places such as local senior and community centers, libraries, and malls are good options. Call ahead to confirm their hours.
- Limit outdoor activity, especially midday which is usually the hottest part of the day, and avoid direct sunlight.
- Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing.
- Never sit in a parked car or leave a person or pet in a parked car.
Stay hydrated
- Drink more water than usual and don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink.
- Drink from two to four cups of water every hour while working or exercising outside.
- Avoid alcohol and liquids containing high amounts of sugar.
- Make sure your family and pets are drinking enough water.
Stay connected
- Check your local news for extreme heat warnings and safety tips.
- Regularly check on friends, loved-ones, and neighbors. Call, text, visit in person, or do a video call.
Stay aware about your own situation as well as what’s going on around you. If you start feeling overheated, weak, dizzy, nauseated, or have muscle cramps, you could be experiencing heat illness. Move to air conditioning, drink water, get under a fan, and put on cool washcloths. If your symptoms worsen or don’t improve, go to the emergency room. If you see a parked car with a child left alone, call 9-1-1 and stay with the car. If you see a pet left alone, also call 9-1-1 and don’t leave until help arrives.
Anothwer way to stay cool is to visit a beach! On beach Water Quality: The City monitor water quality at beaches from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Check the conditions before going in the water.
