City Meetings
Common Council
The Common Council meeting will take place on Tuesday, August 4, at 6:30 p.m. in virtual format. Agenda items include:
- Item 2: Presentation by Council President Sabrina Madison on next steps regarding the Police Civilian Oversight Board and Office of the Independent Monitor. This is in response to agenda item #81 being withdrawn. Here's Council President Sabrins Madison's statement on the matter.
- Item 11: The appointment of Charles J. Romines for confirmation of a five-year term as Director of Public Works.
- Item 12: The appointment of David Schmiedicke for confirmation of a five-year term as Finance Director.
- Item 13: The appointment of Christine Knapp for confirmation of a five-year term as Water Utility Manager.
- Item 71: A resolution approving a revised 2026 Resource Recovery Special Charge rate of $5.40 per month (up from $3.50 per month) beginning on September 1 through the remainder of 2026. The resolution's fiscal note states that the funding would cover a shortfall caused by the lower values of recyclable materials resulting in lost revenue, increased diesel fuel costs, and personnel costs.
- Item 74: A resolution authorizing a contract for Strand Associates to perform recoating and other maintenance work on two Water Utility reservoirs, one of which is in District 3.
- Item 75: A resolution authorizing Madison Parks to apply for a grant of about $1.5 million from the Dane County Conservation Fund Grant Program for the acquisition of 199 acres of future parkland acquired from Madison Crushing & Excavating, Inc. near Reiner Road and Nelson Road.
- Item 80: The Mid-Year Appropriation Resolution, which the City adopts every year to amend the adopted 2026 City Budget. The objective is to transfer funds within and between agency budgets to move funds left over by underspending, or from the 2026 budget's contingent reserve, to areas that are projecting a shortfall. Here's the presentation that Finance staff gave to Finance Committee members at last week's meeting. The key issue here is that City spending remain under the State's Expenditure Restraint Incentive Program limit, which we must not exceed in order to avoid forfeiting several million dollars in vital State aid.

Board of Public Works
The Board of Public Works meeting will take place on Wednesday, August 5, at 4:30 p.m. in virtual format. Agenda items include item 9, which authorizes a contract for planning, engineering, and public engagement services related to portions of East Washington Avenue (including part in District 3) and Schroeder Road. Pursuant to City Ordinances and Policies, as well as in accordance with federal grant requirements, the City advertised for consultant proposals, reviewed the submitted proposals, and recommends the contract be awarded to SEH in the amount of $720,000, 80% of which is funded through the federal Safe Streets and Roads for All program.

Community Development Block Grant Committee
The Community Development Block Grant Committee meeting will take place on Thursday, August 6, at 5:30 p.m. in virtual format. Agenda items include a staff update regarding the purpose-built men's shelter at Bartillon Drive, which will open on September 1st.

You're Invited: North Star Summer Fun Night at Galaxy Park Tuesday

“This year, the North Star Neighborhood is once again hosting a Summer Fun Night event at Galaxy Park in conjunction with other City of Madison organizations. Food, activities, giveaways, tunes with DJ Mirah, and lots of FUN are all in store for August 4th! Check social media to get all the details as we plan this event! Serenity Adult Day Center Proposal at 302 Acewood Blvd - Virtual Public Meeting Thursday
Greater Wisconsin Homecare has applied for a Conditional Use Permit for an adult daycare facility at 302 Acewood Boulevard, formerly Four Lakes Church of Christ. The proposed facility, Serenity Adult Day Center, would operate Monday through Friday from 7:00am-5:00pm and would provide supervised daytime programming and supportive services for up to 28 adults. Client arrivals and departures would be staggered throughout the operating day.
A virtual neighborhood meeting to hear more about this proposal is scheduled for Thursday, August 6, 2026, at 6:00pm. You can join the virtual meeting using your computer, smartphone, or tablet, or you can participate via telephone. The benefit of having the meeting in virtual format is that it will be recorded for people who can't make the meeting time.
