Common Council – Discussion

The Common Council discussion will take place on Monday, August 24, at 5:00 p.m. in virtual format. The topic of the discussion is the City's approach to recent protests and the subsequent re-opening of Williamson & Baldwin St. 

Representatives from the following City agencies have been invited to answer questions from Alders: Office of the City Attorney, the Mayor's Office, the Public Works Department, the Community Development Division, the Finance Department, the Madison Police Department, Public Health Madison & Dane County, the Madison Fire Department, and the Office of the Independent Police Monitor. 

Please note that this discussion is a briefing and not a formal Common Council meeting. No formal actions, votes, or introduction of legislation will occur during this discussion, and public testimony will not be taken.

Transportation Commission

The Transportation Commission meeting will take place on Wednesday, August 26, at 5:00 p.m. in virtual format. Agenda items include:

  • Item 4: Metro Transit's December service changes. In June, the Mayor's Office provided guidance for City agencies in drafting their 2027 Operating Budget requests that included a 2% reduction in the department's base budget. That's happening because the estimated 2027 cost to provide existing City service levels exceeds the State's Expenditure Restraint limit. Metro changes service four (4) times a year, with the December 2026 service change being the only opportunity to change service with starting in 2027. As a first step in achieving its 2% reduction target, Metro is proposing a reduction in service span, impacting early morning and late-night trips on several routes. Here is a detailed report describing those service changes to affected routes C, D, G, H, J, L, O, P, and S to save $387,000 in 2027 Operating Budget expenses.
  • Item 6: Quarterly Traffic Safety Report by MPD. This presentation is always full of important information, but this time it's not yet posted to Legistar. When it is, it will be available as an attachment to this Legistar item.

Final Parks Alive of the Season at Galaxy Park Monday

Connect with your neighbors and engage with your community at a Parks Alive event near you! This program is collaborative effort involving City agencies, community organizations, and mobile resource providers working together to activate parks located in and around Neighborhood Resource Team areas like East Milwaukee Street.

Reminder: Door Creek Watershed Study Public Information Meeting Tuesday

The Door Creek Watershed Study, which covers most of the North Star neighborhood in District 3, is nearing its completion. Flood models were developed to identify flood risk throughout the Door Creek watershed and are being utilized to develop stormwater infrastructure projects that will reduce flood risk to the public. 

During the second public meeting, Stormwater Engineering staff shared flood risk maps showing there is some flooding throughout the watershed in the 1% chance storm scenario in a variety of locations that impact streets and homes including Mclean Dr, North Star Dr, Driscoll Dr and Galileo Dr. Since sharing the flood risk maps, the consultant has been designing conceptual solutions within the flood models to understand what solutions are needed to mitigate flooding. Most involve increasing the size of existing pipes or adding in stormwater storage with stormwater ponds. Some additional analysis of the undeveloped areas north of I-94 was completed to better plan for future development of the Reiland Grove subdivision which is just getting started.

The City will host a third virtual public meeting on August 25th, 2026 at 6pm to share conceptual solutions designed to mitigate flash flooding in the Door Creek watershed. During the meeting, staff will review the existing flood risk, share the potential stormwater improvement ideas, and host a Q&A period for residents to ask questions. Registration prior is required: Aug. 25, 2026 Public Information Meeting Registration
