Highland & University closed through 10/13; Tree removal & MGE work on Virginial Terrace and Norwood Place 10/14; Public Information Meetings, Events & Announcements
postedHello neighbors,
I published a blog post with my rationale for signing on as a co-sponsor of the resolution to end employment for the interim Independent Monitor. Given the volume of email I'm receiving, and my heavy committee meeting schedule this week, it is unlikely I'll be able to respond to any additional queries on this topic before our vote on October 20.
Reminder that the Highland and Campus Drive ramp intersection is closed through October 13, reopening on October 14. Notably, pedestrian traffic is also detoured during this time frame.
On October 14, Urban Forestry will be removing two large trees at 453 Virginia Terrace – one on the Norwood Place side of the property, and the other on the Virginia Terrace side. This removal will be complicated and disruptive.
First, MGE will be de-powering the electrical lines here so the trees can be safely removed. MGE identified 20 homes that will be without power during this time. The street will be closed to allow a crane to help ensure the tree removal occurs swiftly and safely. All homes affected are on Virginia Terrace and Norwood Place and have been individually notified.
Updates and Notices
- Fall Leaf & Yard Waste Season Begins: The first leaf & yard waste set out dates for some neighborhoods was Sunday, October 4. For others, it's different. Get the dates for your home from our website.
- MMSD is continuing to work on updating boundaries for elementary attendance areas: Two additional engagement sessions will be held this week: Monday, October 12, noon-1:3pm online, and Monday, October 12, 5:30pm at the Meadowlands Apartments, 6834 Milwaukee St. All prior engagement sessions are available for review (scroll up the page).
- City of Madison – Dane County Housing Survey: The City of Madison and Dane County are collaborating on a Market Rent Study to support an appeal of HUD's proposed 2027 Fair Market Rents for our area. HUD is projecting a rent decrease of nearly 8 percent in Dane County - a change we believe does not reflect local rental costs or the experiences of families across our community. This decrease could reduce funding and purchasing power for critical rental assistance programs, including Housing Choice Vouchers, Continuum of Care homeless assistance, and Emergency Solutions Grants. We are challenging the proposal by submitting local data gathered through this Market Rent Study. Starting around October 14, approximately 30,000 randomly selected renters across Dane County will receive a survey. If you receive one, please take a few minutes to complete it. Your response will help provide an accurate picture of local rents and support efforts to protect federal housing assistance. Because participants are randomly selected, many renters will not receive a survey. But it is important for those who receive it to fill it out and return it! For questions, please contact the Madison Community Development Authority at 608-235-9507.
Public Information Meetings (PIMs)

- Attic Angels Greenway Repair, Thursday, October 15: The Attic Angels greenway between Blackwolf Drive and the ponds has sections of badly eroded channel.
