Weights & Measures

Businesses in the City of Madison must license all weights and measures retail devices. These include:

  • Scales
  • Gas pumps and vehicle tank meters
  • UPC scanners
  • Timing devices
  • Taximeters

Businesses must pay a fee for each device or unit. Visit the application for the fee schedule of different device types.

Weights and Measures staff inspect devices for compliance annually. An annual license is valid January 1 – December 31. License renewals are mailed in November with payments due by December 31.

If your business is not licensed, it is your responsibility to contact Weights and Measures to get a license.
