Snow Plowing Update: December 7, 2025
Bottom Line
No citywide plowing today. Trucks will be on duty throughout the day working on a variety of snow-related tasks. Be cautious on your Sunday travels.
Operational Details
Streets Division plows were on the salt routes when the storm began. Trucks salted and plowed the main thoroughfares of Madison all through the night.
Around mid-morning today, operations are expected to adjust.
City plows will begin applying sand to the hills, curves, and intersections of residential areas. Sand helps provide traction to top of snowy areas.
Also around mid-morning, we will also start working pushing snow from the sidewalks, paths, and bus stops that are the Streets Division’s responsibility.
Across the city, there are over 200 miles of city-maintained sidewalks and pathways as well as over 1,000 bus stops that require snowplowing. Removing snow from these areas is shared responsibility between the Streets, Parks, and Engineering Divisions.
Travel in Madison Today
Be slow, cautious, and alert. Be prepared to encounter snowy and slippery roads, particularly in residential areas.
Conditions on main thoroughfares will improve through the day as sun and traffic warm the roads. Salt was used, and the roads were plowed during the snowstorm. But as explained during yesterday’s snowplowing update, the cold temperature slows salt’s chemical process that makes the roads bare pavement.
Residential areas are snow-covered, which should be expected following a smaller snowfall event like what we received.
As always in the winter, make good choices while making your way through the city.
No Citywide Plowing Today
Residential areas will not be plowed in response to the snowstorm.
As a reminder, citywide plowing operations occur when there is three or more inches of snow on the roads, and the storm is at or near its end.
This storm did not produce enough snow accumulation for a citywide plowing effort.
In conclusion…
Streets Division stay will be monitoring the roads at the weather throughout the day. Operations will adjust as necessary.
