International Bus Roadeo
Metro Saddles Up for the International Roadeo
May 18, 2026
This isn't your traditional rodeo of horseback barrel racing and trick roping. Instead, it's a competition that highlights bus operators' precision driving skills and more.
The International Bus Roadeo is an annual event that brings together bus operators from across North America. The American Public Transportation Association is organizing this year's event, which will take place in Salt Lake City, Utah, from May 15 to 19, 2026.
Eighty-nine transit agencies are expected to compete in the bus-driving obstacle course, which tests operators' skills and focuses on smoothness of operation and time.
Representing Metro Transit this year is Allen Jacobson, a bus operator competing in his second International Roadeo. Jacobson earned his spot by winning the local Metro Roadeo competition and meeting the qualifications for the international event.
Justin Maki, a member of the International Roadeo Committee and safety coordinator at Metro Transit, is attending both the Roadeo competition and the Mobility Conference, which takes place alongside the event.
Maki said the conference “provides an incredible opportunity to network, exchange ideas, and learn about emerging trends, innovations, and best practices in public transportation." The event brings together transit professionals for workshops, technical tours, and hands-on activities.
He looks forward to bringing back new knowledge and ideas to “help strengthen safety, operations, and customer service at Metro, while also showcasing the professionalism and dedication of our employees on an international stage," Maki said.
