Built in 1863, Gates of Heaven is the fourth oldest surviving synagogue building in the nation. The building was moved to James Madison Park in 1971. It is a popular location for intimate wedding ceremonies and the small upstairs seating area provides a wonderful birds-eye view for guests. The Victorian-era Period Gardens, located a block away on the corner of Pinckney Street and Gorham Street, is a beautiful location for photos.
The building has two restrooms on the lower level, however the restrooms in this historic building are located in the basement and are not ADA accessible. The City of Madison will provide at no additional cost a portable accessible restroom for any reservation that makes such a request ten days in advance of the date of the event. The building and restrooms are open only with a reservation.
There is lighting and electrical outlets throughout the building. There is also central air and heat. Parking is limited to 24 spaces. Alcohol is not allowed at this facility, except in the context of a religious ceremony. Food or beverages other than water are not allowed at this facility.
To maintain the beauty of the building, no nails, staples, or other fasteners that will harm the walls or floors may be used in this or any park shelter. The Madison Parks Division recommends using free standing decorations. No firearms or weapons are permitted on the premises. Violators are considered trespassers and subject to forfeiture or arrest.
