Snow Plowing Updates: SNOW EMERGENCY DECLARED & PLOWING CONTINUES (1/31)

January 31, 2021 5:58 PM

*The following is a message from the Streets Division*

Citywide plowing operations continue. A snow emergency has been declared. Alternate side parking rules are in effect throughout the entire city.

Plowing operations began at 10:00am.  This is a slow process that can take 12 to 16 hours to complete. Madison has nearly 1,800 miles of traffic lanes that need to be plowed, so it just takes a significant amount of time to service them all. Even more detail about our snowplowing strategy can be found on the How We Plow section of the City of Madison winter website.

Throughout the day today, and through the night, make good choices where you park your vehicle and please choose off-street parking options for your vehicles. The fewer obstacles in the roads, the faster and more complete our plowing operation can be.

Be sure to follow posted day-time parking restrictions, too, Plows will be using them through the week as clean-up from this storm continues.

If you have a Monday trash and recycling collection day, do not place your trash and recycling carts in the street. Collection carts in the roadway become just one more obstacle that plow trucks must drive around, making plowing slower.

If you must park on the street tonight, be sure to follow alternate side parking rules. Plow trucks will be out pushing back snow from areas that were blocked by parked cars earlier in the day.
Travel through the city throughout the day will be difficult as residential streets will be snow covered throughout much of the day.

By the time of the Monday morning commute, roads will likely be in good winter driving condition. However, slippery spots may persist, especially on residential streets that will have a thin layer of compacted snow left behind after plowing. Plan on need some extra time in order to arrive at your destinations on time while also being slow, patient, and alert.

Streets Division staff will continue to monitor the roads and the weather. Future updates will be provided as conditions require.
