City of Madison CARES: Public Information Session for Alternative Crisis Response Team Scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 22

June 16, 2021 10:27 AM

Hello Neighbors!

I am thrilled to announce a Public Information Session regarding an alternative City response to mental health emergencies. This is a program that I have worked on with the Madison Fire Department, as well as a wide variety of other community stakeholders over the past year, to provide more compassionate and effective service to our neighbors experiencing mental health crises.

We have worked to learn from Portland, Oregon, and their CAHOOTs program, which has been operating for over 30 years, as well as from Denver, Colorado's STAR program, which has been operating for about a year. We've learned from both of these programs that this type of response has better results for those who need help, than a standard police response.

This program has the potential to positively affect our most vulernable neighbors, and get closer to finding succesful and realistic solutions in both immediate situations, as well as long term ones.

Please register to learn more about this pilot program!

Public Information Session Scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 22

In its ongoing efforts to re-imagine public safety, the City of Madison is planning a virtual public information session to seek public input on an innovative new pilot program called CARES.

The City's Community Alternative Response for Emergency Services (CARES) program will address mental health 911 calls for service through an innovative new mobile unit modeled after the CAHOOTS program of Eugene, Oregon and the STAR program of Denver, Colorado.

The CARES team will consist of a community paramedic and a crisis worker who will undertake continuous education for cultural competency and deescalation best practices, on top of their ongoing professional development in their respective areas.

On June 22 at 7 p.m., the City will host a virtual public information session about the forthcoming CARES program. This public information session will be an opportunity for residents to learn the details of the initiative before the program launches and give feedback for program development.

REGISTER TO PARTICIPATE . You will receive an email with the Zoom link to the meeting.
Questions and comments can be directed to Deputy Mayor Reuben Sanon,
